SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,388, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed September 14, 1889. Serial No. 323.936. (No model.)
To all whom it may cancer.-
Be it known that I, JAMES IV. HOSEA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hutchinson, in the county of Reno and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Sash-I-Iolders; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sash-locks and sash-holders for windows; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation With -a portion of the window-frame and a portion of the upper rail of the lower window-sash broken away to show the looks and rack. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the lower bolt and slotted guard-plate. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the upper bolt and its slotted guard-plate; and Fig. 4 is a detail per-` spective view of the keeper-rack with which the slicling bolts engage when the parts are properly arranged to lock and hold the window-sashes in either the desired open positions, or in the closed position, as may bedesirable or necessary.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the window-frame, which is of the nsual or ordinary construction, with the exception that on one side the upper half of the parting-strip is removed or cut away, and is replaced by a metal rack B, having rectangular teeth O, separated by rectangular spaces or keeper-seats D, extending laterally across the exposed 01' projecting inner face.
The upper cross-rail or meeting-rail E of the lower window-sash is recessed in the upper face at one end in the outer side of the rail at F, and in the recess F is secured, by a screw or screws or in any suitable manner, a slotted face-plate G, which covers a slidingbolt H, preferably rectangular in Outline in cross-section, said slidi'ng bolt II being adapted to have a longitudinal reciprocating movement in its seat, when operated by its finger-piece I, to cause it to be moved into engagement With the teeth of the parting-strip B, to lock the sash in engagment therewith, or to permit the sash' to be moved np or down to the required or desired position, as necessity or convenience may suggest, and afterward locked in position by pushing 01' moving the sliding bolt int its appropriate notch or recess in the rack or parting-strip.
The upper sash K is recessed in its Vertical rail L, the inner face of which bears against the outer face of the rack or parting-strip B. In this recess M is placed an angularly-bent sliding` bolt N, the lookingarln P of which projects inwardly, and is adapted to be engaged with the notched parting-strip or rack by movingit into either one of the rack-seats to lock or hold the window-sash in the required position, or to be withdrawn by its finger-piece and permitted to remain out of engagement therewith, so that the sash may be raised or lowered. The location of these locks andholders being on the inside of the sashes pre- Vents access to them from the outside, unless the window-glass be broken, so that Athey afford safe looking' means for the sashes, either in the open or closed positions, so that the room in which a window provided With them is located may be properly ventilated without permitting the entrance of bnrglars or others to the room unannounced.
The construction herein employed renders sash cords and weights unnecessa-ry; but the cords and weight-s may be used in connection with these devices, and where cords and weights are already in use they may be left in place, and my improved parting-strip and sliding bolts may bc added.
Ha-Ving thus fully described my invention, what I clailn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rack B, taking the place of the upper part of the parting-strip on one side of the window-frame, in combination with the upper sash K, the plate having the recess M, and secured to the rail of the sash engaging the outer side of said rack, the angular bolt N, having the locking-arm P projecting inwardly so as to engage the teeth of the rack, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES 7. HOSEA.
