UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS LONG, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
EXPANSIBLE REAM ER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,360, dated December 17, 1889.
, Application filed July 2, 1889- Serial No. 316,363. (No model.)
T aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS LONG, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansible Reamers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to reamers, taps, and such like tools, and particularly pertains to their adaptation for being expanded in diameter.
The tool of this invention in substance has a cylindrical bore of uniform diameter and a split or splits lengthwise thereof and a core to fit said bore, which is in innerand outer parts, the outer being a tube of an ex ternal diameter to fit the bore of the tool and having a lengthwise split or splits and of an external taper, and the inner a plug to fit within and by a movement lengthwise of said tube to expand it and through it the.
tool containing it in its said bore, all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the invention is illustrated in connection with a reamer, and Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a reamer other than this invention of the ordinary construction, and of the outer part and a side view of the inner part of the core. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are sections, lines 2 2, 3 3, and at 4C, respectively, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A is the reamer, having a bore A of uniform diameter andlongitudinal splits'A A B and C are the inner and outer parts of the core. The inner part B is a solid cylindrical plug having a tapering head B and the outer part 0 is a tube having an internal diameter to fit the plug B and its tapering head B lengthwise splits O and a normal external diameter corresponding to the diameter of the bore of the tool.
0 is a collar fixed on one end of the tube C and having splits 0 across its edge, so as Unscrewing the screw-nut releases the core and tool to contraction, respectively.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An expansible tool having a boreA of uniform diameter and lengthwise split or splits A in combination with a core fitting said bore, made in parts B O, outer and inner, the outer O a tube having lengthwise split or splits C and an internal taper, and the inner B a plug of an external taper fitting and adapted to be moved lengthwise in the tube O, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. An expansible tool having a bore A of uniform diameter and lengthwise split or splits A in combination with a core fitting said bore, made in parts B A, outer and inner, the outer O a tube havinglengthwise split or splits G a split collar 0 held thereon, and an internal taper, and the inner B a plug of an external taper fitting and-adapted to be moved lengthwise, and with a screw-nut D- screwed onto and havingbearing against said collar O of said core-tube O, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS LONG.
