Description

(No Model.)
. J. W. POLLARD & J. B. STOCKTON.
FARM GATE.
No. 417,335. Patented Dec. 17, 1889.
V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN POLLARD AND JOSEPH B. STOCKTON, 6F IVAVERLY, MISSOURI.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,335, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed September 30, 1889- Serial No. 325,560- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, JOHN POLLARD and Josnrn B. STOCKTON, citizens of the United States, residing at W'averly, in the county of Lafayette and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gait es; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to gates, which are first slid back and then swung out in order to allow the passage of a vehicle.
The special object of the invention is to support a gate in such a manner that it will always retain its horizontal position, and never sag when closed, open, or in motion.
, Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation showing the gate closed; Fig. 2,aperspcctive View of the gate when open, and Fig. 3 a vertical section on the dotted line 00 on of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the gate with the latch-lever a fulcrurned on the second rail from the top, and the latch 01, passing between the two forward Vertical battens (t and into a hole of the fixed post B.
C is the rear gate-post provided with the eyes 0 c, in which turn the pintles (Z c on the ends of the arms D E. The latter carry at their junction the grooved roller F, which rotates on a turned end of the diagonal rod D as the gate slides forward or back. The wire E,
which braces the diagonal rod D, has its end c wrapped about the end (1 of the rod D, so as to retain the latterin its true diagonal position.
G is a vertical batten arranged on the gate so as to strike the vertical. guard-piece H when the gate has been run back far enough.
' I J are two horizontal cross-studs connect ing the post C with the vertical guard-piece H, these studs being fastened between the guard piece and post, so as to throw the guard-piece, H nearer to thelatch-postB than is the rear gate-post C. By this construction the gate when closed is supported horizontally between the grooved roller F and the upper stud I, and when open between the pulley and the lower stud J, I may use a roller on the under side of the stud I and on the upper side of stud J, so as to lessen the friction when the gate is in motion.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a sliding and swinging gate, of a grooved roll F, a diagonal supporting-rod D, a horizontal brace E, a rear post having eyes a c, a guard-piece H, and the studs I J, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN w. PoLLARi). JOSEPH B. STOCKTON.
