UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE I'l. CLARK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS;
JACK FOR HOLDING BOOTS OR SHOES WHILE BEING OPERATED UPON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,148, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed July 15, 1889- Serial No. 317,501- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. CLARK, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachnsetts, have invented an Improvement in Jacks for Holding Boots and Shoes while bein g Operated Upon, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention is intended as an improvement upon that described in United States Patent No. 388,831, dated September at, 1888, granted to me.
The invention herein to be described has for its object to simplify the mechanism and to supply means whereby the machine may be more easily and quickly operated and to reduce friction.
In accordance with this invention the jack is composed of two parts or members forming the leg portion, one of which parts is V fixed to or formed integral with a rotatable desired, the heel-piece may be formed int-egral with the said member. One or both members of the jack are hollowed out or recessed to receive between them a-wedge-block having an inclined face to effect a speedy movement of the pivoted member toward and from the stationary member. The other member (herein shown as the stationarymember) is provided with a holder or pin for holding a form or fore part-such, for instance, as shown in United States Patent No. 388,831, granted to me. The holder or pin is preferably arranged on a block adapted to slide on the stationary member.
Figure 1 in side elevation and partial section shows a boot and shoe holding-jack embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a detail of the hand wheel or ring employed to rotate the jack; and Fig. 3, a cross-section of the members of the jack, taken on the dotted line :20 30.
The main post or standard A, preferably made hollow, is formed at its upper end with a tilting head to, having a circular opening, which receives a cylindrical holder a, havrepresented as having a pin 12 (see dotted.
lines,) which enters a socket in the memher I). l
The member 0 of the jack is formed with or fixed to the holder a.
The member I) is held in position contiguous to the member 0 by the spring b The members I) and e are hollowed out or recessed, as at b c, to receive a wedge-block (Z, having an inclined face operating against a friction-roller I), journaled in the member 1). The wedge-block dis secured to a bar (1, passing through and movable longitudinally in the holder a, said bar having at or near its outer end a flange d which is interposed between one end, as c, of a bell-crank lever and an arm 0:, attached to said bell-crank lever. The bell-crank lever is pivoted at- 6 and the other arm of it, as a is connected to a treadle-rod 75, (see dotted lines,) attached to a treadle t by means of a spring 6 As the treadle is depressed the bell-crank lever e 6 moves the wedge-block d to separate the members b c. The bell-crank lever e is held in its rearmost position by a spring o The member 0 has a pin 2, (see Fig. 3 and dotted lines Fig. 1,) which passes through a hole in the member band enters a socket formed in the pin b to hold the heel-piece in place. A block f, having an inclined bottom, is arranged to slide on the member 0 on an inclined plane formed thereon. A pin 3 (see dotted lines, Fig. l) is fixed to the block f,
which enters a socket in the fore part g of the last. The fore part 9 and heel part or piece Z) are separated on the line 4, forming a continuation of the inclined bottom of the block f.
It will be seen that a boot or shoe having a last, as g If, is applied to the jack by the pin 3 entering a socket in the fore part and the pin 1) entering a socket in the member I), and when applied the members be maybe held firmly together, so that as the boot or shoe is withdrawn the fore part only will be removed,
the heel-piece remaining. The next boot or shoe applied Will only contain a fore part, as a single heel-piece may'be employed to cooperate with many fore parts, yet by simply slightly separating the parts or members both the fore part and heel-piece may be removed.
A ring B, having at one side inwardly-ex tended arms B, surrounds the jack, and the arms B of the ring are secured to the member I), it being designed that the said ring shall be grasped by the hand of the operator to retate the jack at any time desired.
1. In a jack for holding boots and shoes while beingoperated upon, the rotatable holder (1', the stationarymember 0, attached thereto, and the member I), pivoted to said holder, combined with the independent heel-piece b dll'ttl'lgOtlOIl said member I), a block f, adapted to slide on the member 0, and a last-holder pin 3, attached to said block, for a form or fore part comprising the toe portion, instep portion, and shank portion of a last, substantially as described. I
2. In a jack for holdingboots and shoes while being operated upon, the rotatable holder (0 and two separable members carried by it,
combined with the ring 13, substantially as described.
' Inajack for holdingbootsand shoes while being operated upon, the main frame or post, two separable members, and means, substan tially as described, for moving said members one with relation to the other, the bell-cran k e 6", the treadle-rod 2, spring and treadle t, substantially as described.
4. In a jack for holding boots and shoes While being operated upon, two separable members, combined with an interposed wedgeblock and attached rod having a flange (Z a bell-crank lever 6 6 having the arm 6, the said part c and arm 6 acting on opposite sides of said flange, and a treadle, substantially as described.
5. In a jack for holding boots and shoes while being operated upon, two separable members movable one with relation to the other, the removable heel-piece and fore part,
and a slide-block movable longitudinally on one of said members and on which the fore 5 part is supported. the heel-piece and fore part being separated on the line of the bottom of the slide-block, substantially as described.
(5. In a jack for holding boots and shoes 5 while being operated upon, a rotatable holder, two separable members, one of which is provided with an inclined face, a heel-piece, and a removable fore part, combined with a slide-block having an inclined bottom ar- 6 ranged to slide on the inclined face of said member and adapted to support the said fore part, substantially as described.
7. In a jack for holding boots and shoes while being operated upon, two separable 6 members, and a two-part last, one of which parts has a pin U, with a socketed end, and adapted to enter one of said members, combined with a pin 2, carried by one of the separable members for engaging the socketed 7 end of the pin ot' the last, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE ll. CLARK.
