UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM Il. THOMAS, OF JENKINTOIVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
WINDOW-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,083, dated November 26, 1889. l Application filed May 3, 1889. Serial No. 309,527. (No model.)
To all wil/om, it may concern:
Be it known that l, VILLIAM H. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Jenkintown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVindOw- Screens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.
My invention has relation to windowscreens, and has for its object to provide simple and efficient means for securing the same in place in the window-frames and permitting of their ready removal therefrom.
My invention consists in the provision of a bolt secured in a suitable recess in each corner of the side of a window-screen, the casing of said bolt being L-shaped in transverse section and secured to said frame at said corners. Instead, however, of the bolt being actuated by a spring and normally projecting beyond the edge of the screen-frame and outside .of its casing, as heretofore, the same, when the screen is not in use, normally rests entirely within its casing and with equal facility rests at its extreme outside position. In fact, myimproved bolt will rest just where it may be found desirable to place it. This result I accomplish through the use of a flat spring secured at one end to the inside of the bolt-casing and at its other end resting on the side or top of the bolt, thus controlling the movements of the bolt and not in any wise assisting` in its actuation. Thus, it will be readily seen, the danger of damage to the bolt by bending or otherwise when the screens are not in use and the bolts project beyond the casing is perfectly avoided. Vhen my improved bolts are once withdrawn, the flat springs prevent their accidental movement into their projecting positions. ln addition, the L-shaped bolt-casings serve to brace the screen-frame at the corn ers where the recesses are formed.
All the details of my invention will be more particularly described hereinafter, and will be clearly understood upon referring to the 'accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is an elevation of a window-screen in-position with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same with the window-frame in section. Figs. 3 and t are enlarged side elevations and plan views of my improvements. Fig. 5 is a perspective of a corner of the screen-frame, showing the recess therein.
A represents the screen secured to the stiles b b h2 b3 of the screen-frame B in the usual manner, which frame slides on the tongues c c', secured to the window-frame C. Instead, however, of providing said frame B with a groove in each side, there is provided but one groove c2 in' the stile b3, While on the other side there is provided a single longitudinal strip c3 on the stile 1)',Which is iiush with the surface of said stile and is similar to one of the walls of the groove c2. In lieu of the other wall, ithere is provided a pair of square lbolts D D, which occupy the position of said discarded wall and are placed at each end of the stile o', thus preventing any movement of the ends of the frame, and said bolts at the same time are of such thickness as to close up the space between the tongue c and the windowsash C', thus preventing the entrance of insects to the compartment through such space. Said bolts slide in recesses c, extending longi tudinally of the Stiles h b2 from their junction with the stile b, which recesses do not, however, eXtend to the surfaces of said stiles, but terminate a short distance therefrom, allowing for the formation of the shallow recesses c2 e3 c4 parallelwith the walls of recesses e, for the reception of the side, top, and end plates ff f2 of4 the bolt-casings F F which are secured therein by the screws g g. The outer ends d of said bolts pass through correspondingly-squared openings f3 in the end plates, which openings are very close to the edge of the side plates f, so as to bring said ends close to the window-sash and at the same time contact with the tongue c,'for the purpose above suggested. The inner ends d of said bolts are considerably wider than the outer ends CZ, having the longitudinal enlargements or swells d2 thereon, near the edge of which, in an opening formed therein, are secured the shanks 7L of the thumb-pieces II, which thumb-pieces are so disposed as to slide within longitudinal slots h2 in the centrallylocated concavities h', formed in the top plates f of the casings F F', and maintain the bolts IOO in the proper positions in the casings, said concavities or recesses being of such dept-h that the thumb-pieces II will not project beyond the surfaces of the top plates. The sides of the inner ends d of the bolts D D opposite the swell d2 are in a line with the edges of the ends d of the said bolts, which edges bear against the inside of the side plates f, thus bringing the outer ends of the bolts close to the outer surfaces of the bolt-casings.
As shown in the drawings, when the boltcasings are in place the walls thereof are flush with the surfaces of the screen-frame, and, owing to the shape of the bolt-casings, being substantially like an elongated L with the end closed, the frame at its corners will be perfectly braced, thus conducing to an increased length of time of usefulness thereof. It will also be readily seen that the recesses for the bolts and their casings can be quickly formed by the use of an ordinary chisel, thus cheapening the construction of the screen and at the same time greatly enhancing its value and utility. The insides of the top plates f have secured thereto, by a screw t or otherwise, aflat spring I, curved at its free end, so as to bear against and exert a pressure on the top surfaces of the outer ends d of the bolts D D, thus preventing their accidental movement and causing said bolts to remain in any adjusted position, and insuring Vtheir remaining in contact with their tongues, and yet not interfering with the Withdrawal of the same into their incased positions, where they will remain until manually removed therefrom.
Besides the bolts coming close to the window-sash said bolts are slightly Withinv the line of the face of the screen-frame. Consequently the latter will come into closer rela'- tion with the Window-sash than do the bolts.
As hereinbefore intimated, I am aware that opening-actuated bolts have heretofore been employed With screen frames, and that screens have heretofore been secured at each end of one side in the window-frame, so that I do not wish to be understood as claiming the same, broadly; but
What I claim as my invention is l. In a screen-frame, the combination of the bolt D, the bolt-casing F, a screen-frame y with a recess in each corner of one of its sides for the reception of the bolt, a iiat spring secured to the inside of the casing and pressing on the side of the bolt, and the casin g secured to the screen-frame at said corner, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
2. In a window-screen, the combination of the frame B, having the stiles b b2, )rovided with the recesses e and the recesses e2 e3 e4, the bolts D and the casings, F F in said recesses, the screws g g, the flat springs I, pressing on said bolts, and the screws t', securing said springs to the insides of said casings, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a window-screen, the combination of the frame B, having the stiles b b2, provided with the recesses e and the recesses e2 e3 e4, the bolts D and the casings F F in said recesses, the plate f, the depression h in said plate, the slot h2 in said depression, the thumbpieces H, the shanks 72, of said thumb-pieces passing through said slots and into the ends d of said bolts, the plates f2, the openings f3 in said plates for the passage of the ends d of said bolts, the plates f, the screws g g', the flat springs I, the screws z', securing said springs to the insides of the plates f', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a window-screen, the combination, with the Window-frame C, provided with the tongues c c, of the frame B, having the stile b3, with the groove c2 therein, the stile b', with the strip c3 thereon, and the stiles b b2, provided with the recesses e and the recesses c2 e3 e, the bolts D and' the casings F F in said recesses, the screws g g', the thumb-pieces II, with their shanks passing through said casings and into said' bolts, the springs I, and the screws t', securing said springs inside of the casings, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I'n testimony whereof .I have hereunto set my hand, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania', this 22d day of April, A. D. 1889.
VILLIAM H. THOMAS.
