Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM F. DAVIDSON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
iMPROVED BOTTLE-FILLING MACHINE.
Spccilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 4l ,603, dated February 16, 1854.
To all zul/1,0112, it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVM. F. DAVIDSON, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Filling Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement relates to the class of devices employed -for the rapid and accurate iilling of bottles, phials, and other `small vessels by the use of a syringe; and myinvention relates to, first, aprovision-for securing a constant and uniform supply of liquor in the syringe barrel or cylinder, whether the discharge be fast or slow, and with no additional manipulation, the devices by which the discharge is ei'ected being made also available for replenishing the cylinder; second, a provision to avoid spillage and Save liquors in the -intervals of charging.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal section ot' an apparatus embodying my invention.
A is a cylinder open at top and discharging by a nozzle, B, which issues from the bottom or' the cylinder on the side nearest to the operator. The ventage-nozzle B is in the intervals of discharging closed automatically by a valve or stopper, C.
D is a plunger made to lit the cylinder A, its rod being hinged to a lever, E, which is retracted by means of an upward-bearing spring, F. A rod, G, depending from the lever E, and connected to a treadle, H, enables the apparatus to be worked by means of the foot of the operator.
The lever E is so connected by rods I and I and lever J to the stopper C as to lift said valve, and thus open the ventage B in and secured against leakage by a stuffing-box or` the like.
The automatic vreplenishment of the cylinder is secured by the following means: K is an inlet to the cylinder closed by an inwardly- Opening valve, L, and communicating with a barrel, M, or other reservoir by means of a iieXible pipe, N. O is an aperture in the plunger closed by a plug, I), to enable the charging of the cylinder independentlyof the suction-pipe N. Thus when it is desired to prime the pump the plunger may be temporarily withdrawn, and a small quantity of the liquor being poured into the cylinder, the plunger is pressed down until the liquor rises through the aperture O, which is then closed, and the suction-pipe being inserted into the barrel,tl1e operation may proceed in the regular way.
I claim herein as new and of my invention l. The provision of the valve-guarded inlet K L and iieXible or other suction pipe M in the described combination with abottle-filling syringe, substantially as set forth.
2. The provision of a stopper or valve, C, Y
at the ventage, of a bottle-filling sy-ringe,` said valve being made to close and o pen automatically in conjunction with the action of the piston, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
W. F. DAVIDSON. Witnesses:
