SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,043, dated November 26, 1889.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. TRAMMELL, a citizen of the United States, residingat Lakeland, in the county of Polk and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Crossing Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of railway-crossing gates which are designed to prevent cattle or live stock from escaping up or down the track while crossing the same; and it has for its objects to simplify the construction of the gates and the mechanism by which they are operated, and render the same more durable and accurate in their operation, as more fully hereinafter explained.
The above-mentioned objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of a railway-track, showing my improved system of gates in connection therewith; and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the track and a portion of one of the gates and operating devices, taken on the line :1; .90 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates the rails of the track laid upon and secured to the cross-ties B in the usual inanner.
The letter B indicates the gates. These are hinged or pivoted to one of the cross-ties B in any convenient manner, but preferably to the pintles O, the shanks of which are driven into the cross-ties.
The beams D of the gates are transversely slotted near their hinged ends, as indicated by the letter F, and in said slots are arranged to play the lateral bolts of the tilt-levers G, which have their fulcrums in pillow-blocks H, secured to the cross-tie next adjacent to that to which the gate-beams are pivoted, as shown. The tilt-levers between the tracks and at each side thereof are provided at their free ends with platforms I, over which the cattle or stock must necessarily pass in crossm g the railway. The cross-beams forming the free ends of the gates are provided with barbs B, so as to form an effectual barrier to cattle or live stock when raised.
The tilt-levers are located between the beams of the respective gates, which serve as guides for the same and )revent their displacement, which is apt to occur when the said tilt-levers are located below the beams, as in the gates of this class heretofore constructed.
By arranging the tilt-levers between the gate-beams it is evident that both the levers and beams may be made much larger in cross-section than when the gate-beams lie above the tilt-levers, thus securing strength, durability, and compactness.
The cross-tie contiguous to the forward edges of the gate is provided with vertical spikes or barbs I, which prevent the stock or cattle from passing over the same on the line of the track.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the above description, and is as follows: In cross ing the track the cattle or stock are compelled to pass over the platforms. The platforms will be immediately depressed by their weight, throwing up the gates an d closing the passage-way over the track. \V hen the platforms are relieved of the weight of the cattle or stock, the gates will assume a normal position by their own weight.

The combination, with the cross-ties of a railway, of the gate-beams pivoted or hinged thereto and provided with longitudinal slots near their pivoted ends, and of the tilt-levers located between said beams and provided with bolts working in said slots, the said tiltlevers being fulcrumed in bearings on one of the cross-ties and provided with platforms over which the stock or cattle mustpass, substantially as specified.
