HEATING-FURNACE FOR ROLLING-MILL' PLANTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,007, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed August 3l, 1889. Serial No. 322,583. (No niodel.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Il. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Worcester, in the county of IVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolling-Hill Plants, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same and illustrating the nature and essential features of my invention, and in Which- Y Figure l denotes a plan view in section, and Fig. 2 a side view in section, of so much of the plant as is :necessary to fully illustrate my invention, the furnaces in Fig. l being X, Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 being shown in vertical sectional view on line Y Y, Fig. l.

My invention consists in the employment of a primary furnace wherein the billet is heated, a secondary furnace communicating with the primary furnace and forminga conduit within which the heat of the billet is maintained while passing from the primary if furnace to the train of rolls or reducing mechamsm, and a train of rolls placed in juxtapo-l sition to the mouth of the secondary furnace and from which the billet is drawn by the rolls; second, in the employment of two or more primary furnaces Vin connection with a common secondary furnace and a train of rolls in juxtaposition therewith, whereby two or more billets are simultaneously operated upon; third, in a primary furnace in which the billets are heated and a secondary furnace communicating therewith, said primary fur` nace having an opening` through which the billets are admitted to the primary furnace, and an opening in alignment with the passage to the secondary furnace, by which the billets are transferred from the primary to the secondary furnace; fourth, in the employment of a primary and a secondary furnace and a train of rolls, as hereinafter describedf the floors of said furnaces having a downward inclination toward the train of rolls in order to facilitate the passage of the billets; fifth, in the employment with the primary furnace in which the billet is heated of a secondary furnace communicating with the primary furnace, by which the heat of the billet is maintained in passing to the rolls, and hav ing its floor upon a lower plane than that of the primary furnace, forming an offset over which the billet is pushed in its passage from the primaryto the secondary furnace; sixth, in providing means by which the billets are fed to the primary furnace, and, seventh, in providing means by which the billets are pushed from the primary to the secondary furnace. l
In the accompanying drawings I have shown an arrangement of furnaces whereby utwo billets are simultaneously operated upon, A A' representing the two primary furnaces shown in sectional view through the reverberatory chambers of each and B denotes the common secondary furnace communicating by means of the passages C C with the primary furnaces A A', and having a mouth Il', through which the billets are delivered to the rolls I'I II H, forming, in the presentinstancc, a portion of a continuous rolling-mill, each of the rolls being provided with the grooves b whereby two billets can be simultaneously operated upon.
Each of the primary furnaces A A' is provided with openings A2 A2, through which the billets are admitted to the outer portion a of the floor A4, and also with openings A5 op" posite the secondary furnace B and in alignment with the passages C C', to allow the billets to be pushed from the primary furnaces into the secondary furnace.
The floors of the furnaces are inclined downward toward the rolls Il H, in order to .facilitate the passage of the billets, and the floor B2 of the secondary furnace B is placed. upon a slightly lower plane than that of the floor A4 of the primary furnaces A A', forming an offset c, over which the billets are pushed in their entrance into the secondary furnace B, and which serves to check the rearward longitudinal movement of the billets during their manipulation in the secondary furnace B. The billets are entered between the plain rolls D', and by them forced through the openings A2 into the furnaces A A upon the outer portion a of the floors ALl A4. "When roo v rod F is inserted between the grooved rolls D2, with its inner end against the end of a billet G, which is forced by the action of the rolls D2 through the passages C or C into the secondary furnace B, where its temperature is maintained, while it is seized by suitable grappling appliances and drawn forward through the mouth B to the rolls Il H, in the usual and well-knownl manner. The lower roll of each pair of feed-rolls D D is capable of being raised or lowered by means of the hydraulic jack E, or other well-known appliances, whereby the rolls can be rendered inoperative at will, in order to allow the pushrod F to be retracted and the heated billets successively pushed into the secondary fur-` nace, from which they can be simultaneously drawn into the train of rolls.
For the purpose of illustrating my present invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings a Siemens regenerative furnace, having' the three reverberatin g or heating chambers contained in an integral structure; but neither the type of furnace nor the speciiic form of construction as represented is an essential feature of my invention. Neither do I confine myself to the apparatus as shown and described for the purpose of charging the primary furnaces with billets or for transferring them to tlre secondary furnace.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of a primary furnace or heating-chamber wherein the billets are heated, a secondary furnace or heating-chamber communicating with said primary furnace and forming a continuous passage from said primary furnace to a train of rolls or apparatus for reducing the billets, whereby the temperature of the billets is maintained, and a train of rolls or reducing apparatus placed in close juxtaposition to the mout-h of said secondary furnace, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a heating-furnace and a train of rolls, of a furnace communicating with said heating-furnace and forming a continuous passage from the heating-furnace to the rolls, whereby the temperature of the billets is maintained in their transit from the heating-furnace to the rolls, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with two or more heating-furnaces wherein the billets are heated, and a train of rolls or apparatus for reduc ing the billets, of a secondary furnace communicating with each of said heating-furnaces, and forming a common passage from the heating-furnaces to the train of rolls or reducing apparatus, whereby the temperature of the billet-s is maintained in transit from the heating-furnaces to the rolls, sub-` stantially as described.

The combination of a primary heatingg furnace wherein the billets are heated and a secondary furnace communicating therewith, by which the temperature of the billets is maintained in transit to the rolls, said pri mary furnace having an opening through which the billets are fed to the furnace, and an opening in alignment with the passage to said secondary furnace, by which the billets are transferred from the primary to the secondary furnace, 'substantially as described.
The combination of a primary furnace in which the billets are heated and a secondary furnace communicating therewith, and forming a passage from said primary furnace to the rolls, whereby the temperature of the billets is maintained in transit to the rolls, said primary furnace having a iioor inclined downwardly toward said secondary furnace, to facilitate the transference of the billets from the primar-y to the secondary furnace, substantially as described.
6. The combination of a primary furnace in which the billets are heated land a secondary furnace communicating therewith, and forming a passage from the primary furnace to the rolls, whereby the temperature of the billets is maintained in transit from the primaryfurnace to the rolls, the floors of said primary and secondary furnaces being downwardly inclined from the rear of the primary furnace, where thebillets are received, to the discharging-mouth of the secondary furnace, substantially as described.
'7. The combination, with a primary furnace in which the billets are heated, of a secondary furnace communicating therewith, and forming a passage from the primary furnace to the rolls, whereby the temperature of the billets is i maintained in transit to the rolls, the floor of said secondary furnace being upon a lower plane than that of the primary furnace, forming an offset over which the billets are pushed in their entrance to the secondary furnace, substantially as described.
8. The combination, with a primary furnace in which the billets are heated and a secondary furnace communicating therewith,
and forming a continuons passage from the' primary furnace to the rolls, said primary furnace having' an opening through which the billets are fed to the furnace, of a pair of rolls opposite and in juxtaposition to said opening, whereby the billets are fed to the primary furnace, substantially as described.
9. The combination, with a primary furnace in which the billets are heated and a secondary furnace communicating therewith, and forming a passage to the rolls, said primary furnace having an opening in alignment with the passage to said secondary furnace, of a pair of groovedrolls opposite said ope-ning, and a push-rod actuated by said grooved rolls, by which the billets are transferred from the primary furnace to the secondary furnace, substantially as described.
10. In a rolling-mill plant, the combination of two or more primary furnaces in which the billets are heated, a secondary furnace communicating with each of said primary furnaces, and forming a common passage, where- IOO by the temperature of the billets is maintained in transit to the rolls, a train of rolls capable of rolling` two or more billets simultaneously, and placed in close juxtaposition to the mouth of said secondary furnace, whereby the billets are drawnl from said secondary furnace by said rolls, and means, substantially as dcscribed, by which the billets are successively fed to said primary furnace and transferred from the primary furnaces to said secondary ro furnace, substantially as described.
