PETROLEUM-MOTOR ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,908, dated November 26, 1 889. Application iled June 25, 1889. Serial No.` 315,479. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom z't may concern! Be it known that I, KARL GRAMM, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Petroleum-Motor Engines, yot' which the followingis a specification. j This invention relates to petroleum-motor engines, and has for its object to provide an apparatus by means of which the explosive mixture is produced and introduced into the cylinder of the engine by causing a jet of air to take up a certain quantity of petroleum, Awhich mixes therewith' in the forni of a spray, the mixture `being then carried into the heated cylinder.
The'invention is -carried out by means of the apparatus illustrated inthe accompanying drawings.
The air-jet is produced by means of a small air-pump A, driven by the engine, and passes from the valve-chamber` I3, through valve I), into the chamber of the cylinder situated behind the valve II, where, by the sucking action of the air-jet, the petroleum is drawn out of the vessel G through the pipe f, and, mixing with the air in the form of spray, the same and with a further body ot' air. into the vaporizing-chamber of the cylinder.
Figure l shows diagrammatically avertical section through `the complete apparatus. Figs. 2 and 3 show the construction of 'airpump employed in elevation and tion, on an enlarged scale.
The compressing-pump A is constructed as a pump Without valves, the pum p-cylinder C being mounted on a fixed pivot at Q, so' as to have ein-oscillating motion imparted to it by the piston or plunger as this is reciprocated by a crank driven by the engine. On the side of the cylinder is formed a fia-t face R,
against which is pressed air-tight ahead S,
fixed on the end of av pipe V. From the bottom of the cylinder a passage 'l leads to a port U in the face R. Assuming the crank to be rotating in the direction ofV the arrow,
u Fig. 2the piston during its upward or suction stroke will move' the cylinder from the central position shown toward the left and thenback again into that position, so that' during such stroke the port U will remain uncovered, and consequently the piston will passes with vertical secdraw in air through it. Ou the return or compression stroke the cylinder in movingto the right of the position shown and back.
forced by the piston through the enlargedopening of S into the pipe V, the port U passing from behind the head again toward the end of the stroke. The head air-tight against the' face R by a spring, the compressed air in the pipe V cannot escape when the cylinder is performing the first-described semi-oscillation. A volume of compressed air being thus maintained by the pump in the chamber B, with which the pipe V communicates, a portion thereof is allowed to escape bythe opening of the valve D on the upstroke of the engine-piston C, which air, passing through pipe E, issues as a jet immediately over the orifice of the petroleum-conduit f, before described, draws a certain quantity 0f petroleum out and carries it with it in the form of spray, 'together with a further quantity past the valve H .in the valve-chamber H', into the cylinder-space F, thus forming a charge consisting of finely-divided petroleum spray and air, the petroleum of lwhich be- S being pressed` situated at right 'angles thereto, and, as
of air drawn in through the pipe L,
comes efiectually vaporized on contact with the heated recessed bottom K ofthe cylinder, the charge being subsequently fired in the usual manner.
In order to maintain a constant level of the petroleum in the vesselG, there is arranged above the same a supply-tank M, from which it is allowcd'to drip into so-as to be slightly in excess ot' the amount used, the surplus flowing od through the overflow-'pipe O into the receptacle P. l
The valves D and l-I are both actuated by suitable cams driven bythe engine and timed so as to open them at the required moment.
,Having I claim as'new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'1. In a petroleum-motor engine, the combination, with the cylinder C', having Vaporizing-chamber J, chamber H opening into the vaporizing-chalnber J, and having au inwardly-closing valve l-I, and air-discharge pipe I., the air-chaliiber B, with an inwardly- G through a cock N,
. air-pump for conveying an intermittent. air-v 2. einem@ opening valve D, and air-pipe E, connecting` with valvechainber ll', and the *air-pipe V, connecting with air-chamber B atone end and having the fixed head S at the other end, of the oscillating air-pump cylinder A, having theside air-passage T, leading from' one end of the cylinder and having the port U in the flat projection R, movable into and 'outo connection with the head S, snbstantiallyjas described.
2. In a petrolen 11i-motor engine, a cylinder C', having a vz-tporizing-ehamber J, 'a valvechamber l1', opening into the chamber J, with.
an' inwardly-elosin g valve I-I, 'an air-discharge pipe L, and air-jet pipe E, connected with an jet into the valve-chamber H', in combinar tion with the oilareservoir G, having an over- -flow-pipe O, andan oil-discharge pipe f, con;
necting with valve-chamber H', the drip-.rev ceptacle l?, located beneath the pipe 0, and the oilreservoir M, having a cock N, located above the reservoir G, substantially as described. A
The coinbination, with the cylinder C', of a petrolenmfniotor engine having avaporizingchamber J a val ve-chalnbcr ll', open ing into oil-discharge pipe f, connecting with the valve chamber H', an oil-receptacle P, located beneath the pipe 0, an voil-reservoir M, with cock N, located above the 'reservoir G, an os- .cillatin g airpump cylinder A, having the side the Y air-passage T leading from, one end of cylinder, and having the air-outlet port U in the fiat projection R on the sidoof the cylinder A, and` the air-chainber B, with the inlet-.valve D, air-jet pipe E, connecting with the valve-chamber Il, and the airpipe V, connected at one end with the air-chamber B, and at the other having the fixed head S, connecting with port U, .and into and ont of connection with which the port U is movable, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
