JAMES BOYLAN, OF HUBBARD, IOIVA.
VEHICLE-POLE TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,830, dated November 26, 1889. Application filed September 10, 1889. Serial No. 323,512. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES BOYLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hubbard, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Vehicle-Tongue Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in attachments for vehicle-tongues.
The object of the present invention is to provide a tip for vehicle-tongues adapted to receive the ring of a neck-yoke and prevent the same from becoming accidentally detached from the tongue and enable it to be quickly secured in place and removed therefrom.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tip embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates a tip provided in its rear end with a concavity, Which forms a socket adapted to receive the end of a tongue, which is retained in place by rivets or bolts passing through perforations a of the tip A. The lower side of the tip, near the front end thereof, is provided with a recess a, which receives a hinge-section Aand completes the tip at this point. The section A is hinged to the tip at the rear of the recess a, and is normally held closed by a spring B, which is socured to the tip A and has its free end bearing against the section A, the parts being slightly recessed for the reception of the spring to enable the tip to present a smooth surface. At the end-of the recess a the tip is provided with a curved notch that has its front Wall shouldered, and the section A is slightly cut away at this point to form, with the curved notch a an approximately circular opening to receive the ring of a neck-yoke. The ring rests in the circular opening or notch (t and bears against the shoulder a and should a lug or other portion of the harness break, the front end of the tongue '20 will not become disengaged from the ring of the neckyoke and fall at the horses feet and frighten them; but when it is desired to release the neck-yoke it is only necessary to raise the hinge-section A and slip the ring out of the curved notch. Should the neck-ring by any accident slip from the curved notch ta it would engage the shouldered front Wall a of the recess a and be held there by the curved front end a of the section A.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that pole-tips made in accordance with the invention are adapted to be readily attached to the end of a pole and are capable of securely retaining the ring of a neck-yoke and preventing the latter from becoming accidentally loose and letting the pole drop, and enable the ring to be readily inserted in place and removed therefrom when desired.
hat I claim is- The combination of the tip adapted to be attached to a tongue and provided with a recess at, having its front wall shouldered and its rear portion provided with the notch a having its front wall shouldered and the section A hinged to the tip and the spring, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES BOYLAN. Witnesses:
JOHN WHEELER, WILL M. BOYLAN.
