SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,725, dated November 26, 1889. Application filed March 15, 1889- Serial No. 303,482. (No model.)

Be itknown that we, IVILLIAM B. MAIN and JOHN G. BURNAUGH, citizens of the United States, residing at Abingdon, in the county of Knox and State certain ncwand usefulImprovementsin Road Carts; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to road-carts, an d has special relation to the seat-springs therefor.
The obj ect of the invention is to provide a simple and improved spring of the above class, designed, in addition to its spring action, toserve as the pivotal connection be tween the thills and seat-bars.
A further object of the invention is to provide springs of this character which are adapted to be readily and quickly applied during theconstruction of the cart, and which will possess advantages in point of inexpensiveness, durability, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a road-cart provided with our Ill]- proved spring. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken longitudinally through the spring and through the adjacent portion of the seat-bar. Fig. at is a detail perspective View of the spring detached.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the cart, which may be in the main of the usual or ordinary construction, and comprises the axle B, thills C O, cross-bar D,'seat-bars E E, and seat F.
G G designate our improved springs, which are approximately V-shaped and consist of .any desired number of leaves.
The springs are preferably formed of steel, and are disposed one at each side the vehicle and designed to connect the seat with the thills and render the former yielding. The upper and lower arms converge toward their front ends, and at their points of intersection are formed transverse eyes J J. Just in front of the latter both the upper and lower arms are preferably secured to the seat-bars by clips L L. The springs are located at the inner side of the adjacent thill, and are pivotally secured thereto by bolts M M, passing through the eyes J and into castings jj, secured upon the under side of the thills.
The operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the artto which it appertains. A spring constructed as above can be readily applied to a vehicle of the character mentioned, anddispenses with any other construc tion of pivotal connection between the 'thills and seat-bars other than that formed by the springs themselves. 7
lVe claim as our invention- The combination of the thills, cross-bar connecting the same and the straight seatbars, and approximately V-shaped springs formed at their apexes with bearing-eyes, through which they are pivoted to the thills, the top arms of said springs being bolted to the seat-bars, While the lower arms project rearwardly and over the cross-bar, said latter arms being provided with recesses or indenturcs to accommodate the latter, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
