UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILL CHRISTY, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES CHRISTY, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
SWITCH FOR ELECTRIC-MOTOR TROLLEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,289, dated November 5, 1889.
Application filed August 8, 1889- To all whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, YVILL" CHRISTY, a citizen of the United States, residing" at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Switches for Electric-Motor Trolleys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in IQ switches which serve to deflect electric-railway trolleys from one to another of several branching overhead line-wires at junction points, and is a modification and improvement of the invention for whiclrI was granted I 5 Letters Patent of the United States, No.
-l02,06l, dated April 23, 1889.
The object of my invention is, as in my former application, to produce a simple and effective trolley-switch which shall be entirely self-acting and readily applied to and removed from its operative position, and which, in addition thereto, shall insure the trolley taking the proper branching line from the main wire.
To the above purpose my invention consists in the peculiar and novel features of form, construction, and arrangement hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved switch connected with junction-wires and showing the trolley passing the same; Fig. 2, a plan of my improved switch, and Fig. 3 an under plan of same.
In the said drawings, A and B designate two overhead line-wires of an electric-railway or other motor system, which unite at the point J with a single line-wire L, such junction-point being substantially perpendicularly above a similar junction of the railway or track. (Not shown.)
O designates my improved trolley-switch, which is approximately of Y form, being composed of the stem D and the arms E F, di-
Serial No. 320,084. (No model.)
verging from each other at one end of said stem, and preferably formed integrally therewith at their points of union with the same. At the point of separation of the branches or arms E F from the stem D a concavo-convex web G, which preferably forms an integral part of the switch, extends outward a suitable distance between and toward the extremities of the arms E F, as shown. Beneath the stem D is a dependent longitudinal flange or rib (1, (preferably formed integral therewith,) the lower contour of which is approximately semi-elliptical. This flange unites with the lower edge of the arm E, these two forming a continuous guide for the trolley. Below the arm F is a flange f, which serves to retain the trolley on the flange d.
The switch is made of electrical conducting material-as brass-and all of its parts are preferably formed integral with each other.
The switch is secured in position with the several wires by wrappings W \V, substantially as shown and described in my former patent hereinbefore referred to.
T designates the trolley, which is of usual form, and the operation of the switch in connection with the trolley is substantially the same as that described in my former patent, excepting that by continuing the flange d to the arm E and adding the flange f below the arm F all possibility of displacement of the trolley is avoided.
I claim A switch for electric-motor trolleys, consisting? of a stem and divergent arms having a web uniting said arms, and a flange beneath said stem which unites with one of said arms, the other arm being provided with a depend ent flange, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the aboveIhereo unto set my hand.
\VILL Cl-IRISTY.
In presence of 0. WV. FooTE, O. E. HUMPHREY.
