"FEED MECHANISM FOR BUTTON-HOLE SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,875, dated October 29, 1889. Application filed June 19, 1888. Serial No. 277,569- (No model.)

Be it known that I, RUDOLPH SPAI-IN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and usethere will be no lost motion, comparatively' no friction, and few parts liable to get out of order, and also wherein the machine may be run much lighter and the feed be manipulated in any desired direction.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in 'the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of 'this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in'all the figures.

' 2 is a central longitudinal section illustrating the feed in position to make a long stitch, and Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the position of the feed in makinga short stitch. Fig. 4 is a section on line a; a, of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a section on line y y of Fig. 4.
In the bed of the machine, at one end, a rotary disk is pivoted, to which the power is applied, provided upon the under face with an essentially diamond-shaped cam-groove 11. In the cam-groove 11 one end of a feed' lever 12 is made to travel, being provided with a frictionroller 13. The feed-lever 12 is fulcrumed about centrally atone side of the bed, the extremity in engagement with the cam-disk 10 being preferably curved at about right angles to the body, the opposite end being flattened. A trip-lever 14, proten vided at'the outer end with an extension 15, projecting at right angles to the body, is f ulcrumed by said extension, near the intersection with the body, to the inner side of the feed-lever, adjacent to the fulcrum of the lat- The body of the trip-lever 14, a slight distance from the outer end, is carried downward and'inward, forming an integral angular extension 16,- the extremity of which extension is provided with aslot l7 and in said slot a block 18 is adj ustably secured by means of a set-screw or similar fastening device. The block 18 extends upward in direction of the bed,the outer face sliding upon the flattened extremity of the feed-lever, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A second horizontal block 19-is adjustably secured to the upper face of the body of the trip-lever and made to extend inward, the movements of both blocks 18 and 19 being limited by suitable stops integral with the feed-lever, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. An outwardly-extending horizontal weighted arm 20 is attached to the vertical extension 15 of the trip-lever at the fulcrum thereof, purposed to keep the block 19 normally in contact with the arm of 'a clutch, hereinafter described.
The feed-wheel 21 is located at the end of the bed opposite to that in which the driving cam disk is pivoted and provided with a cam-groove 22 in the under face, one half of the saidgroove being larger in diameter than the other half, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. The periphery of the said feed-wheel, which has heretofore been smooth, is provided with cogs or teeth 23, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3. A shifting-lever 24 is pivoted at the inner end to the bed and carries a pin 25, which travels in the cam-groove22 of the feed-wheel. The outer end of this lever is connected by a link 26 and rod 27 with the extension 15 of the trip-lever, as best shown in Fig. 1.
At one side of the feedwvheel is pivoted a brake-lever 28,- carrying a brake-shoe 29, adapted to engage the periphery of the feedwheel, and provided at the lower end with an arm 30, extending in the direction of the feedlever 12. Adjacent to the brakelever 28 is a pinion 31, held to revolve and have lateral movement in a recess produced in the bed and engage the teeth of the feed-wheel, which pinion is provided with an integral downwardly-extending hub 32, as best shown in Fig. 4. The hub 32 is surrounded by a loose collar 33, having spaced ears 34one at the top and one at the bottom-and two side openings 35 and 36, the opening 35 being located at the ears and the opening 36 at one side of the same, as shown in Fig. 5. Between the ears 3% of the collar a clutch 37 is pivoted, the body of which is essentially adapted to the contour of the collar, being provided with an arm 38, extending outward at right angles to the body, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 5, which arm is adapted for engagement with the blocks 18 and 19 of the trip-lever, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. To that end the upper surface of the said arm 38, at the outer extremity, is provided with a recess 39. The clutch is purposed to revolve the pinion 31, which in turn is geared with and rotates the feed-wheel. To accomplish this result, near the pivoted point the inner face of the clutch-body is provided with a lug or jaw 40, entering the collar-opening 35 and engaging the hub of the pinion, and a second lug or jaw 41 at the junction of the arm 38 with the body, which latter jaw, entering the collar-opening 36, also engages the hub of the pinion, as best shown in Fig. 5.
The pinion 31 is thrown in and out of gear by a hand-lever 42, fulcrumed near said pinion and provided with a post 13 entering the same. The pinion 31 is thus" carried by the lever 12. In the extremity of the hand shifting-lever,over the pinion, an adjustable slide 41 is secured, adapted to engage the arm of the brake-lever, as best illustrated in Fig. 1. The other extremity of the hand shiftinglever is attached to a crank 45, one member whereof is projected through and held to slide in an angular slot 46, formed in the bed. To the projecting member of the crank, at the outer side of the said bed, a knob is usually secured. Tension is exerted upon the collar 33 and the crank end of the handlever in direction of the feed-wheel by attached springs 47 and 48, as clearlyshown in Fig. 1.
\Vhen the pinion is held out of engagement with the feed-wheel, and even when in engagement, the feed-wheel may be rotated to adjust the stitch by revolving a pinion 49, held to revolve in the bed engaging the said feed-wheel, as best shown in Fig. 1.
The pinion 19 is usually manipulated by a crank 50 beneath the bed, secured to a spindle, which spindle is in turn attached to the pinion.
In operation it will be observed that by reason of the cogged periphery of the feedwheel, the hand-lever 12, and the pinion 49 the said wheel may at all times be freely rotated to adjust a stitch without injury to any part of the machine and while said machine is running, and that from the absence of any friction -clutch to rotate the feedwheel the machine will run light and the wheel remain intact. volves and the pin of the shifting-lever 21 reaches that point in the cam-groove 22 at which the short stitches should commence, the said lever, automatically acting upon the trip-lever, throws the block 18 nearest the feed-wheel up to engage the arm of the clutch, whereupon the feedlever, reciprocating,
causes said block to reciprocate the clutch, and as the arm is short the clutch only moves the pinion 31 a sufficient distance to turn the feed-wheel one tooth. At the next change the block 19 is thrown in engagement with the clutch-arm, and, the arm being longer, the feed-wheel is revolved thereby two teeth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letter Patent, is-
1. In a button-hole sewing-machine, the combination, with a feed-wheel having a toothed periphery and a feed-lever connected with the driving mechanism, of a .hubbed pinion meshing with the feed-wheel, a collar surrounding the hub of the pinion and having side apertures, a clutch-arm pivoted to said collar and provided with lugs for alternately engaging the hub of the pinion, a spring for returning the clutch-arm to its normal position, a trip-lever fulcrumed upon the feed-lever, and spaced blocks upon said triplever alternately engaging the clutch, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a button-hole sewing-machine, the combination of a feed-wheel havinga toothed periphery, a feed-lever connected with the driving mechanism, a hand-lever, a pinion carried by the handlever and meshing with the feed-Wheel, a clutch operating the pinion, a trip-lever pivoted to the feed-lever and provided with blocks alternately engaging the clutch, a second pinion meshing with the feed-wheel, and a crank-handle for operating the said second pinion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a button-hole sewing-machine, the combination, with a feed-wheel having a toothed periphery, a feed-lever connected with the driving mechanism, a weighted triplever fulcrumed upon said feed-lever, and spaced blocks attached to the trip-lever, of a hubbed pinion meshing with the feed-wheel, a collar surrounding said hub and provided with side apertures, a clutch-arm pivoted to said collar alternately engaged by said blocks, and a hand-lever, substantially as shown and described, connected with the hub of said pinion, as and for the purpose specified.
1. In a button-hole sewing-machine, the combination, with a feed -wheel having a toothed periphery, a feed -lever connected with the driving mechanism, a weighted triplever fulcrumed upon said feed-lever, and spaced non -aligning blocks secured upon the trip-lever, of a hubbed pinion meshing with the feed-wheel,a collar loosely surrounding said hub, a clutch pivoted to said collar and alternately engaged by said blocks, a hand-lever connected with said pinion, a slide adjustably held upon the hand-lever, and a brake-lever engaging said slide, substantially as shown and described.
