Description

'F. W; JUDD.
SHEET METAL EAR FOR KETTLES, 6w.
Patented Oct. 29, 1889'.
(No Model.)
WtTNEEtSESQ zen of the United States, residing at Cleve- Ohio, have invented certain new and useful -which are secured to the sides of a kettle,
, which the bail maybe connected.
suitably-shaped blank of sheet metal to form 'ing thereof.
. ofany convenient shape and form thewihgs,
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED W. JUDD, OE CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AVERY STAMP- ING COMPANY, OF OHIO.
FoR KETTLES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,856, dated October 29, 1889; I Application filed February 20, 1889. SerialNo. 300,533- (No model.)
To allwhom it may concern: 7
Be it known'that I, FRED W. J UDD, a citiland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Improvements in Sheet-Metal Ears for -Kettles, &c., of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of devices pail, or other vesse1,-to serve as ears, with It consists of an ear made by bending a a doublevertical rib, through which is formed a hole, by whichthe loop of the bail may be site directions substantially at right angles to said rib, whereby the ear may be attached to the kettle.
It also consists in the novel-shaped blank herein shown. and described; and it also consists of an ear of the specified details of constructionherein shown, resulting from the precise method of bending said blank, all of which is pointed outdefinitely in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective end of av bail attached thereto in one of the ways in which said bail maybe attached. Fig. 2 isa plan view offja blank from which said ear is constructed by the proper bend- This blank consistsof a rectangular central part a, two end pieces 0 c, which may be and the two parts 12 .b, lying between said parts a and c c, which are substantially triangular in form. This blank is bent in the rectangular-part a in the direction of the 40 lines 1 1 and the two parts I) I) brought side by side, thereby forming a double rib B. The blank is also bent at the points indicated by the lines 2 2 in oppositedirections until the Wings 0 0 lie substantially at right angles to the double rib B. A hole I) is punched or drilled through the double rib B to aiford means for attaching the bail D, and holes 0 c are also formed in the wings, whereby it may be attached to the kettle.
In the form of the finished ear shown in the drawings the rectangular part a of the blank isbent into a substantially cylindrical form, and the hole 6' through the double rib is formed close beneath it. This cylindrically- 5 5 bent part adds greatly to the strength of the ear, and at'the same time serves as an arbor upon which the bail may be easily turned,
. Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sheet-metal blank consisting of a rectangular part a, the ends a c, and the substantially-triangular intermediate parts I) b, for the purpose specified. I l 2. A sheet-metal kettle-ear consisting of the vertical double rib B, having a hole I) and'a cylindrically-bent part A upon its upper edge, and the wings a c, bent in opposite direct-ions substantially at right angles tosaid 7o rib, for the purpose specified.
