Description

(N0 Modl.)
W. P. BROOKS.
CORSET CLASP.
Patented Oct. 29, 1889.
A A A A UNITED STATES- PATENT -..OFFICE.
WILLIAM BROOKS, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
CORS ET-CILAS P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,645, dated October 29, 1889.
' Application filed June 21, 1889. $erial No. 315,061. (No model.)
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
My invention relates to corset-clasps, and
. has for its object to provide a simple and cheap device for uniting the meeting edges of corset-sections, and also to facilitate the ready unclasping of said sections.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of corset-steels provided'with my improvement in detached condition, while Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the steels clasped:
' Similar letters denote. like parts in both figures of the drawings. v
A B are the steels, the, former of which is provided with the usualstuds a.
C is a locking-hook secured to the steel B, and provided with an eye 1), leading into an upwardly-inclined recess 0. This eye is large enough to admit the opposite stud a, while the recess is narrower than the width of the head of said stud, but will readily accommodate the shank of the latter.
D are the upper hooks, each one of which has aneye d, a vertical open gate e, and an inclined slot f, connecting said eye and gate. The bottom of the gate 6 is below the slot f, so that a locking-point In is afforded for the purpose of preventing the studs from slippingbackward within the eye after they have been brought into locked position at the base of said gate.
The operation of my improvement isobviously as follows: The bottom stud is first inserted within the eye I) and drawn up within the inclined recess 0. The remaining studs are then successively inserted through the -eyes d and drawn up through the inclined slots f, beyond the locking-points h. As the studs are forced up through the slots f the steel B will be slightly sprung, owing to the cam action of said studs against the lower inclined walls of said slot; but when the studs have passed beyond the locking-points h the steel will spring back to normal position, thus bringing said studs at the base of the gates e and securely locking the studs behind the points It. In order to unclasp the steels, the bottom stud is simply forced down the inclined recess 0, within the eye 6, and then Withdrawn from the latter, and thereupon the upper studs are withdrawn from the open gates e at a single twitch. The lower or closed hook is substantially the same as the lower hook shown and described in my Letters Patent No. 407,770, issued July 30, 1889, with the exception that in the latter the inclined recess and eye are connected by a vertical slot, whilein the present invention said slot is dispensed with, and the eye leads directly into the inclined recess. However, my newly-invented upper hookscan be used in connection with various kinds of locking-hooks, and I-do not therefore wish to be circumscribed in my use of the latter.
It is immaterial whether the locking-hook be located at the bottom or at the top of the steel, since the result aimed at is accomplished in both instances, with the only difference that it is merely more convenient to have said hook at the bottom of the corset.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a corset-clasp,'the steel B, having secured thereto the hooks D, having eyes (2, Vertical open gates e, inclined slots f, connecting said eyes and gates, and locking-points h at the outer ends of said slots, in combination with the steel'A, having secured thereto 2. In a corset-clasp, the steel having secured thereto the hooks provided with eyes in the same vertical plane, one of said hooks having a closed recess leading upwardly from -the headed studs, substantially as set forth;
the eyes, the rest of the hooks having gates In testimony whereofI affixlny signature in in the same vertical plane, and inclined slots presence of two witnesses. leading from said eyes into the gates at a point above the bottom of the latter, in WILLIAM F. BROOKS. 5 combination with the steel having secured \Vitnesses:
thereto the headed studs, substantially as F, W. SMITH, J12,
set forth. F. W. GILHULEY.
