SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 412,130, dated October 1, 1889.

To alZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. SHIVELY, a citizen of theUnitedStates, and a resident of Oerro Gordo, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Loaders; and'I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of tlie'invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of aside view of the hay-loader. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a section of the toothed cylinder.
This invention has relation to hay-loaders;
and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed outin the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates an inclined frame having parallel side boards A, which are provided at different intervals intheir lengths with bars A bolted or fastened to side strips or pieces A secured upon the inclined beams 0, said frame being composed mainly of two lower parallel longitudinal beams B, two inclined beams O, joined at their lower ends to the beams B in front, and diverging therefrom upward toward the rear, and secured to the upright braces D D on the beams B, and the cross-bars indicated at- E, connecting the beams B. Runners F are provided on the front ends of the beams B of this frame, and it is supported in rear by wheels G, secured to a revolving axle which carries a driving-gear H. To the front ends of the beams B are pivoted the ends of a bail K, to which, at or near its middle, is pivoted the rear end of an adjusting hand-lever I, having its fulcrum at c on a cross-bar a of the front frame M, which is supported on the front wheels L through the truck J. A segmental rack 11 is also provided on this front frame M,said rack having a series of notches and adapted to hold the hand-lever at any point after adjustment. The front frame M is provided with the trusscd side bars h which extend rearward on each side of the main frame, and are pivoted to the upright braces D D of said frame at about their middle portion, as indicated at b. The side bar trusses consist of metallic braces on, centrally bowed or inclined from the center upward toward each end, and bolted at their ends to the under side of the bar 1' and at the center to short uprights m in turn bearing against the under side of the bars M.
The front end of the frame M is supported upon uprights J, which are carried by a truck J, consisting of a rectangular frame, and swiveled in position by means of the fifth- Wheel 50, mounted in the usual way upon the front axle J. To this truck, at its front side, is secured the tongue N. This front frame is also provided with a bearing 6 for the front end of the long shaft cl, the rear bearing for which is located in the rear portion of the main frame at c, and said shaft is provided at its front end with a notched hand-wheel f, whereby it may be turned. A latch g serves to secure the hand-wheel at any point. On its rear end the shaft (1 bears the wheel 72, which engages the rope K, the ends of which are attached to the ends of the transverse carrier-frame I, whose shaft V is pivoted in bearings P and Z, the bearing P being bolted to the rear ends of the sills B of the main frame, and the bearing Z being fastened to a cross-bar between the uprights D, to permit of the adjustment or tilting of the carrierframe.
The driving-gear H engages a toothed Wheel m on the shaft '22, which carries a sprocketwheel S, carrying the chain R, which also engages the sprocket-wheel S and the intermediate sprocket-Wheel T on the shaft 19. The latter shaft also carries the bevel-gear u,
-whicl1 engages the bevel-gear v of the shaft V, which extends to the rear at the pivotal center of the transverse carrier-frame, and bears the sprocket-wheel IV, which carries a chain 1'', engaging a sprocket-wheel '26.
The sprocket-wheel S is secured to the shaft a:' of the upper roller or cylinder E of the inclined carrier-apron Z, and the sprocketwheel u is secured to the shaft of the inner cylinder or roller G of the transverse carrierapron Z", which consists of a series of transverse slat-s 0 secured to endless belts 0 The cylinders E and F of the inclined ICO carrier-apron are provided with slats d, and the apron itself is provided with cross-slats c, secured to endless belts 0 which, together with 'the said slats, constitute the apron Z, the slats c of the aprons engaging the slats cl of the cylinders, as indicated in Fig. 1. The lower cylinder F of the main carrier-apron Z is provided with teeth t,which project from its slats, and are designed as said cylinder is rotated to take up the hay from the ground.
By suitably adjusting the lever I the front end of the frame A can be controlled so that its cylinder F with'its teeth will clear any inequalities in the ground intervening the runners F, and at the same time permit the teeth to readily take up the hay, thus preventing the teeth plowing into the ground. The main carrier-apron takes the hay from the cylinder and carries it up the inclined main frame, whence it is discharged upon the pivoted transverse carrier P, Whose apron Z carries it up on the wagon moving alongside. The carrier P is provided with a side board P to prevent the falling off of its contents. As the hay increases on the wagon the transverse carrier is adjusted to raise its outer end, which projects beyond the side of the main frame, as shown, to the proper height, so that the hay can be deposited on that which has been already placed on the wagon in position for its distribution bythe packers on the wagon in forming the load.
A tension-roller D is arranged in bearings under the inclined carrier-apron in rear of the toothed or spiked cylinder F to take up the slack of the apron.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A hay-loader consisting of the inclined carrier-frame supported at its rear end on wheels and at its front end on runners or shoes, the adj ust-able transverse carrier pivoted to the rear end and projecting beyond the side of the inclined carrier-frame, the front truck having the trussed side bars pivoted at their rear ends to the inclined frame, the bail connected to the front end of said inclined carrier-frame, the lever mounted on the truck pivoted to the bail, and the segmental catch on the truck, substantially as specified.
2. In a hay-loader, the combination, with the inclined carrier-frame and the transverse carrier pivoted to the rear thereof, of the drive-wheel and the sprocket-wheel S, the sprocket-wheel S on the upper roller of the inclined carrier-belt, the intermediate sprocket-wh eel T,th e chain R,en gaging said sprocketwheels, the shaft 10 and its bevel-gear u, the shaft V and its bevel-gear c, and sprocket W and the sprocket of the transverse carrier connected therewith, substantially as speci fied.
3. The combination of the inclined carrierframe, its carrier apron and cylinders, the runners on the front end of the frame, and the wheels supporting the rear end of the laterally-proj eeting adj ustable transverse carrier-frame pivoted to the rear end of the inclined frame, its carrier, the front truck, its trussed bars pivoted to the inclined carrierframe, the lever mounted on the truck and connected to the front of the inclined carrier-frame, and the adjusting-rod journaled in the inclined platform, having means at its front end for its manipulation, its rear end bearing a wheel engaging a rope connected to the transverse carrier-frame, substantially as set forth.
