J. A, SHEPARD. AIR AND FEED WATER PUMP POR GONDENSING ENGINES.
No, 412.048. Patented 0st. 1, 1889.
Witwe/wao UNITED STATES JAMES A. SHEPARD, OF HAVANA, NEXV YORK.
AIR AND FEED-WATER PUMP FOR CONDENSlNG-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,048, dated October 1, 1889. Original application filed August 27, 1887, Serial No. 247,998. Divided and this application filed April 9, 1888. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. SHEPARD, of Havana, in the county of Schuyler, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air and Feed-later Pumps for Condensing-Engines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in feed-water pumps for steam-boilers, the present application being a division of an application filed by me August 27, 1887, Serial No. 247,998, wherein the invention is illustrated and its functions described in connection with a steam-engine and a steam-boiler ot novel construction.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrative of my invention, I have shown the same in central vertical section.
In said drawing, A indicates a pump consisting of an upright barrel or case provided at its base with an induction-valve V, above which is the piston P, of the 4form of a hollow cylinder open at the top, and provided at its bottom with a litt-valve V. The said piston is operated by a rod J', driven from any suitable source ot' power-as, for instance, anl eccentric on the driving-shaft of the steamengine on which it is employed, asillustrated and described more fully in my said pending application.
Below the induction-valve V the pumpcase A is provided with an inlet-opening m, whereby it is adapted to communicate with a pipe leading from the interior of a steam-condensing chamber, which receives the exhaust from the steam-engine, the arrangement being such that the pist-on P will pump through said pipe the water of condensation and air from the steam-condensing chamber of said condenser, as in the apparatus shown in my aforesaid pending application. The upper part of the aforesaid pump-case is provided in its side with a vert-ical slot a and a port b above said slot. To the exterior of this slotted side of the pump-case Aie firmly secured a supplemental pump-case A which has an opening in the side adjacent to the case A and coinciding with the slot a and port l?. In vertical guide-channels through the upper (No model.)
and lower ends of the supplemental pumpcase A slides the supplemental piston P', which is actuated by the piston P of the pump by means of the pin d, which couples the rod J to the piston P, and projects through the slot o, and has its end lirmly attached to the supplemental piston P. It will be noted that the piston P is hollowed out at its lower end at :15, and is provided with slots s and s openin g into said hollowed-out portion, thereby providing for the proper working of the apparatus. The lower end of the supplemental pump-case A is provided with a discharge-opening', fromwhich leads a pipe n to the water-space of the boiler.
In the operation of the invention the pump A draws the water of condensation and air from the condenser and transfers said water to the supplemental pump A through the port h, whence it is forced into the boiler by the said supplementalpump. In order to insure the addition of a further quantity of feed-water to the boiler than that furnished by the water of condensation only, I provide at some part of the apparatus through which the water of condensation is passing (for instance, the pump A) a supply-pipe, so as to admit additional feed-water with the water of condensation, the mixture of the two being then forced into the boiler.
In the drawing I have illustrated at m the inlet-opening of said feed-water pipe, which may conveniently extend to and tap the waterjacket of a condenser of the kind shown in my aforesaid pending application, said pipe being provided with the usual stop-cock for regulating the quantity of supply to the pump.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a feed-water pump for steam-boilers, the combination, with the air-pump A, provided With the piston P, and having the con denser-pipe inlet-opening m for the admission of the water of condensation, of the boiler feed-force pump A', provided with the piston P and the cross-head pin CZ, connecting said pistons and inclosed within said pumps A and A', substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pump-case A, provided with the induction-valve V at the base, the vertical slot uy in its side, and the IOO port h above said slot, the piston P, provided with the lift-valve V ,the supplemental pump- Case A provided with the discharge-pipe fn, and open at its side and secured at said side to the side of the ease A, having the aforesaid slot and port, and the piston P connected with the piston P by the coupling-pin d, projecting through the slot af, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto 1o signed. my name, in the presence of two Wituesses, at Havana, in the county of Schuyler, in the State of New York, this 24th day of March, 1888.`
