SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,548, dated September 24, 1889. Application filed J' une 19, 1889.' Serial No. 314,784. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that l, GEORGE S. ELLIOTT, of Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliutter-VVor-kers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to. which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in combined shutter workers and fasteners, the object being to produce a substitute for an ordinary shutter-hinge possessing the functions of ashutter-worker for opening or closing the shutter, and also of a shutter-fastener which will automatically catch when the shutter is in either of its extreme open or closed positions upon the inside of the casing beyond the reach of an outsider, thus not only effecting a secure fastening when the shutter is open, but also a burglar-proof lock when it is closed, and in sc doing entirely dispensing with other fastenings.

A further object is to provide a device which may be easily applied, will be effective and convenient in its operation, and which may be placed on the market at a low cost.

' With these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in thev claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the shutter closed, with my improvement attached. Fig-.2 is a sectional view taken on line a: of Fig. 1, the shutter being open. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line y y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detached view of the hinge-sections and the lockingplate.

A represents a window-casing and B a shutter hinged thereto. The upper hinge 1 may be of any of the varieties generally used .for blinds or shutters, and the lower hinge is of peculiar construction, and as it involves some of the principal portions ofmy invention will be described in detail. A plate 2, corresponding to the plate of hinge 1, is secured on the outside of the frame. This plate is furnished with a narrow elongated slot 3, ex tending nearly the entire length of the plate, and opposite this slot the vertical pintle or post 4 projects upward to or nearly to the upper end of the slot. The pintle is provided with a straight groove 5 in the face adjacent to the slot, and the function of this will appear hereinafter. The other leaf G of the hinge is secured to the shutter and has a sleeve or socket 7 on one end, which encircles the pintle 4. A narrow spiral .slot or inclining guide S extends from one end of this sleeve to the other and throughout its. entire length extends half-way around the sleeve7 so that its lower end will be opposite the groove 5 when the shutter is Wide open and the upper end will be opposite the groove when it is closed. A latch-plate 9 is secured on the inside of the frame, directly opposite the plate This plate has an elongated slot 10 therein also, but preferably somewhat shorter than the slot 3 in the other plate. A lug 11 is formed on one edge of this slot and projects inwardly to form a catch. The

thumb-latch 12 is pivoted in the casing and extends through the slots 3 and 10, and the outer end 13 projects through the spiral slot Aor guide Sinto the groove 5 in the pintle.

The inner end 14 terminates in a thumbpiece. The springs 15 throw the latch behind the catch automatically7 where it is held either in an elevated or depressed position accordingly as the shutter is shut or open. The

impingement of the latch within the spiral slot necessarily swings the shutter, as the latch has a straight up and down movement, and when fastened behind the catch the shutter is held fast, thus making it absolutely beyond control from the outside and consequently burglar-proof.

Still another feature of importance may be mentioned in conclusion, and that is, that the shutter maybe operated entirely from the inside without the necessity of opening the window or raising the sash.

It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to IOO the particular construction herein set forth; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with a shutter and casing, of hinges by which the shutter is connected with the casing, one of said hinges having a spiral guide thereon, and a latch having connection with the guide whereby the shutter is swung by raising or lowering the latch, substantially as set forth.

rIhe combination, with a shutter and casing, of hinges by which the shutter is connected with the casing, one of said hinges having a spiral guide thereon, and a latch pivoted transversely within the casing and having engagement at one end with the guide, a catch for retaining the latch in position, and springs for throwing it behind the catch, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a slotted plate having a grooved pintle thereon, and a l1ingeleaf having a sleeve with a spiral slot mounted on the pintle, and a pivoted latch one end of which extends through the spiral slot and into the groove in the pintle, whereby the leaf of the hinge is swung by the movements of lthe latch, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination, with a casing having slotted plates on each side thereof, one of said plates having a latch thereon and the other having a grooved pintle, of a shutter havinga hinge-leaf secured thereto, said leaf having a sleeve with a spiral slot therein mounted on the pintle, and a latch pivoted in the casing with one end proj eoting through the groove and spiral slot and the opposite end in position to be engaged by the catch, substantially as set forth.
