ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT LYNN, SR, OF BRIGHTON, IOWA.
WAGON-TONGUE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,799, dated September 10, 1889.
Application filed July 2,1889. Serial No. 316,356. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT LYNN, S11, of Brighton, in the county of Washington and State of Iowa, have invented a new and usef ul Improvement in XVagon-Tongue Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in tonguesupports for wagons and the like, seeking to provide a simple novel construction by which to hold the tongue up, and so ease or relieve the horses from the weight of such tongue.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, the figure is a bottom view of my invention as in use.
The tongue A, axle B, and hounds C may be of ordinary construction, the pivot-bolt D extending from side to side, as shown.
The improved devices consist of the spring E and the socket-plates F, which I will now describe in detail. The spring E is formed of a wire or rod bent centrally upon itself, providing a bail-like arm e, the cross-bar e of which bears under the tongue proper, the forward end of such arm 6 thereby bearing under the tongue and at a point in advance of the pivot of the tongue. At the rear of arm 6 the rod or wire is coiled, forming coils 6 which receive the pivot-bolt D of the tongue in the adjustment of the device for use. From these coils extend the rods 6 forming the ends of the wire or rod, the extremities of which in the use of the device fit in the socket of the socket-plates F, which plates in use are secured to the axle, preferably at the front side thereof,
and are provided with a number of openings or sockets f, into which the ends of the spring may be adjusted to adjust or vary the tension of the spring. Thus in use the spring may at first have its ends fitted in the upper sockets of the plates F, and afterward, when Weakened from the strain and use, may have its tension increased by adjusting its ends into lower sockets, as desired.
It will beseen that the invention is simple, cheap, and can be conveniently applied by a farmer or other user to an ordinary wagon without requiring the services of a wheelwright or other skilled'workman.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The improved tongue-support herein described, consisting of the spring formed with arms 6, coils e and rods e and the plates F, having sockets or openings adapted to receive the free ends or extremities of rods 6 all constructed and adapted for use, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, substantially as de scribed, of the axle, the hounds, the tongue, the bolt D, the plates F, having sockets or openings f, and the spring coiled around the bolt D, having an arm extended forward from said coils and bearing under the tongue, and having rods extended rearwardly from said coils and fitted at their ends in the sockets of plates F, substantially as set forth.
