0. DUISDIGKER. GHALK HOLDER.
N0.408,Z97. Patented Aug. 6, 1889.
UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
CARL DUISDICKER, OF MINDEN, \VESTPI-IALIA, ASSIGNOR TO WVILIIELM DURGE, OF BRAUNSOHVVEIG, GERMANY.
CHALK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,297, dated. August 6, 1889.
Application filed October 13, 1888. Serial No. 288,034- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL DUISDICKER, 1ner chant, of Minden, Scharnstreet, No. 10, a citizen of Germany, residing at Minden, in the Province of IVestphalia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohalk- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to protect against breaking and undue wear the chalk which is used by tailors in marking cloth as a preparation for cutting out garments. This object is effected by an improved casing for the chalk, constructed as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the casing or holder when open. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the chalk-holder, showing the chalk within by dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of the same at right angles to Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged detail views of the clamp whereby the chalk is held, these views being taken at right angles to each other.
A piece of chalk K, suited to the use mentio11ed,is held within a casing 7t, consisting of 'two sect-ions 0 0, which are connected together at one edge by hinges 0 0 that leave a slot 0, between them, through which the tip of the chalk extends for use when the casin g is closed. At the other end of the casing one section is provided with a catch o, which takes over a flange u of the other section and holds the two sections thus closed. Strips g of india-rubber, are attached to the inside of the section 0 0 at the edges of slot at.
The section 0 is provided with two parallel slots 8 8 which have between them a plate 75 opposite the central line of the chalk and having a series of perforations Z throughout its length.
The casing contains a spring-clamp m, consisting of two jaws 1) b pivoted together in the middle at 6 c and having upward extensions d (1 above said pivot, between which a spring f is placed. This spring by its expan sion presses together said jaws 011 the chalk to hold it securely.
clamp m at that point until said stud is forced out of said perforation.
To fasten the chalk K in the holder, the sections 0 0 are opened, the extension d presses against the resistance of spring f so as to open the clamp m, the inner end of chalk inserted in said clamp, the latter allowed to close on said chalk under the action of spring f, the sections 0 0' snapped together, and the clamp moved downward until the chalk is in the position shown by Fig. 3, with the free end of said chalk protruding through slot a. The rubber strips g g prevent all abrasion or crushing. As the chalk is worn, it is gradually fed down in the same manner through said slot, the stud 1 being shifted from one of said holes Z to another. This is easily effected, as the spring yields to a slight outward pull and will return promptly, and the slots 5 5- allow free n1otion,when released,to pieces 0" T in line with said series of perforations Z. IVhen there is occasion to carry the chalk in the pocket, it may first be withdrawn entirely inside of the holder by moving the clamp upward sufficiently.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a chalk-holder, the combination of sections 0 0, having a catch at one edge and a slot and hinges at the other, with a clamp at tached to the inside of one of said sections but movable toward or from said slot, for the purpose set forth.
2. A pair of sections 0 o, hinged together to form a casing or holder for the chalk, provided with slot at, for allowing the protrusion of the chalk and having rubber strips attached to it at the edge of the slot, for the purpose set forth.
3. The spring-clamp m, having an outwardly-extending part, in combination with a spring-catch attached to said part, an inclosing'case provided with a slot for allowing the protrusion of the chalk, a slot at an angle thereto for allowing such outward extension of said part, and a series of perforations parallel to the latter slot for engaging said springcatch, substantially as set forth. 4
- 1. In combination with a casing slotted to allow the protrusion of the chalk and having the edge of the slot lined with rubber, a springclamp arranged within said casing and movably attached thereto, the jaws of said clamp being also lined with rubber in order that the forations e, the clamp-jaws 1) b one of which has two curved pieces r 1' extending outward through said slots, the spring f, which forces said jaws against the chalk, and the springcatch g, attached to said curved pieces between them and having a stud 1', adapted to enter any one of said perforations, the said sections 0 0 being hinged together at c c and having a slot at between the hinges, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
