RUDOLF RICKENBAOHER, OF PATERSON, NEXV JERSEY.
TAKE-UP MECHANISM FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,262, dated August 6, 1889. Application filed June 1, 1888. Serial No. 275,701. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLF RIcKENBAcHnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, Passaic county, State of New J ersey, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Take-Up Mechanism for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to take-u p mechanism for looms, and has for its object to so actuate the cloth-beam as to cause the beam to take up the cloth at a uniform rate of speed during the various stages of its enlargement, owing to the winding of the cloth thereon.
The invention consists in devices and combinations of devices, which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows in elevation one end of an ordinary loom with my invention attached. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the take-up mechanism detached. Fig. 3 is a part front View of the same. Fig. 4 shows a portion of the regulating mechanism, and Fig. 5 is a part sectional plan of the device on line 00 as of Fig. 2.
A represents one end of an ordinary loom, having the usual frame A, lay b, cloth-beam C, heddles (Z, crank-shaft e, pitman f, warpcreel g, driving-gears h and 'i, and balancewheel 713. The loom, being constructed as is usual, needs not, it is thought, to be further described herein.
To the frame A, and in a suitable position thereon, l fix by belts or otherwise a plate or bar B, in the upper end of which bar I arrange one end of the shaft of the cloth-beam C, and fix on the said end of said shaft a gearwheel 0, on which gear I place pins C and U". The gear 0 gears with and is actuated by a pinion D, that is integral with a gearwheel E, meshing with and receiving its motion from a pinion F, integral with a gearwheel G, which latter is turned by a pinion H, that is integral with a ratchet-wheel L, all of the said gears and pinions being arranged on studs fixed in the bar B, and as shown. On the stud m of the ratchet-wheel L, I pivot loosely 'a slotted lever N, and mount an additional ratchet-wheel O, which latter has integral with it a bevel-gear P, that gears with and actuates a like bevel-gear P ,fiXed on the inner end of a screw R, which latter is arranged in a bearing formed in the lever N, and which is provided with an eye-nut R, as shown. The lever N is provided with pawls S S and plate B, with pawls S S, to act upon the Wheel L, as hereinafter stated.
In a slot formed in a plate T projecting from bar B, I arrange the lower end of a movable bar T, which bar is provided with a round screw-threaded upper end, and has pins 1 and 2 secured therein, and a spring Z, surrounding said end, and carries pawls T, said bar also passing through an eye-stud T fixed in a projecting lug T fastened to plate or bar B, the spring Z being placed between pin 2 and said stud T On the upper screw-threaded portion of the bar T, I fix by jam-nuts a depending bracket TV, and arrange in said bracket a screw J, that carries a nut J", having a pin J, and a bevel-gear J which latter gears with a like gear J integral with a ratchet-wheel J arranged on a stud J fixed in the bracket XV.
The loom is supposed to bein motion. The lay b, actuated by the driving mechanism shown, by means of cord f passing around pulley f, imparts an upand-down movement to the lever N, which lever in each upward movement of the same causes the pawls S S to engage the teeth of the wheel L and turn the same, the pawls S S serving as retaining-pawls, and in this way impart intermittent movement to the ratchet-wheel L and a like movement to the cloth-beam C by means of the train of wheels described between the ratchet-wheel and cloth-beam. The takeup mechanism having been adjusted by the weaver as the weaving proceeds, and a certain number of yards having been woven and the fabric wound on the beam and the tension on the cloth increased by such enlargement of the beam 0, the pin C engages pin J, which forces the bar T downward, which action of the bar compresses spring Z, causes pawls T T to turn ratchetwheel O and gear P, which latter turns screw R and carries nut R outward on the said screw R, which shortens the stroke of the lever N, (the cord f being attached to said nut) causing the pawls S S to take up a less number of teeth on the wheel L at each upward movement of the lever N and decreasing the speed of the cloth-beam O.
The pin J having escaped from the pin C and the bar T having been raised to the position shown by the action of the spring Z, the pin IO ward movement of the nut R on the screw R, a further shortening of the stroke of the lever N, and a further decrease in the speed of the cloth-beam O, the action being repeated at each succeeding revolution of the Wheel C. and engagement of the pins 0 and C respectively, with the pin J and ratchet-wheel J Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the cloth-beam and the gear C thereon, ratchet L, the gearing intermediate said ratchet and the gear 0', the lever N, a pawl or pawls thereon, and means for vibrating said lever, of screw R, nut R, to which said vibrating means are connected, the bevel-gear on said screw, the bevel-gear P, the ratchet O, to which gear P is connected, the bar T, pawls carried thereby and engaging said ratchet O, the frame B, the spring Z, the bracket carried by said bar T, the screwthreaded rod mounted in said bracket, the bevel-gears J 2 J the ratchet J the pins C 0 and the nut J carrying pin J, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
RUDOLF RICKENBAOHER.
