Description

Ntra STATES ATENT FFIC' GIROLAMO MILrANO, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,765, dated December 1, 1863.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GIROLAMO MILIANO, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved mode ot' preventing, relieving, or curing certain diseases of the testes, the spermatic cord, and their envelopes 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is `a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
I he nature of my invention consists in providing suspensory bandages with a set. of strings, braids, or tapes made of silk, linen, woolen, or any other material, which apparatus will contract a large bag or suspensory bandage to any desired size, wherewith to make any necessary compression on diseases existing within the testes, the spermatic-cord, and their envelopes; or, to make it more clear, I make a suspensory bandage in any of the known forms or kinds, (though I prefer a large linen thread or silk knitted bag, which makes the instrument both light, strong, and airy,) and apply thereto six strings, braids, or tapes, or three separate pairs of them, which are run through the bag or net-work in a circuitous or round manner at its superior, central, and inferior portion ot the same, and then are made to come out on the opposite sides ot' the bag when, each string being drawn in concert in opposite direction of its fellow, the bag becomes contracted or closed, while the disease within diminishes, when they may be brought forward and fastened together in front ofthe same under the penis; or merely after the ba g has been put on and contracted sufficiently around the tumor, the superior and middle strings may be tied in front, While the inferior ones may be fastened across the baseof the tumor, always commencing with the superior or uppermost strings. be compressed equally.
It will be seen at a glance that by the use of these strings the bandage can be reduced to any dimension desired. The superior strings A compress the diseased mass at its neck or In this manner the whole disease will spermatic-cord region, at the root of the scrotum, under the penis infront, and in the perenium behind, thus preventing the entrance of a hernia within the tunica virginalis or the descent of unnatural fluids, such as venus blood, as in varicocele, te. Strings B are the second or middle strings, which contract the bag around the largest circumference of the disease, thus by their pressure creating absorption by the capillary vessels, or press away any pathological iiuid or solid accumulation that might remain into the body of the tumor in such diseases as hernia, scrotalis, orchitis, varicocele, incipient h'ydrocele, chronic enlargement of the testes, and also aid the superior strings to perform their oflice. Strings C aid in making the pressure equal of the superior and middle strings in such dieases as edema of the scrotum, relaxed testes, Sto., and should the bag be required at any time to be made smaller as the disease within shrinks before it, it can be readily et'- fected by inclosing a portion of the bag within the two inferior strings and tying them.
Figure 1 represents the bag in use. Fig. 2 represents the ba g closed. Fig. 2 represents the bag open.
The operation of this bandage is founded upon the practical knowledge ofthe anatomy, physiology, and pathology of this region.
" What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe application to suspensory bandages of a set of strings, braids, or tapes, which are run through the bag in a circnitous or round manner, and made to come out at the sides of the same, which when drawn in opposite direotion to each other Willcontract such instrument or bag to any desired dimension, thereby adapting the bag to any case and make equal compression upon diseases existing within the testes or their appendages, thus relieving, preventing, or curing such diseases.
GIROLAMO MILIANO. Witnesses:
GAsrAR GODONE, Jr., BENJ. BRADLEY.
