Description

T. O. BELDING'... ROLLING COLT-ER.
' (No Model.)
Patented July 23, 1889.
Sumewtoz Will UNlTED STATE PATENT OFFICE- THOMAs O. BELDING, OF CANTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNIVERSAL PLOW ooMPAnY,-OF WOOSTER, OHIO.
ROLLIN COLTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 407,568, datedJuly 23. 1889.
Application filed May 3, 1889. Serial No. 309,531- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolling Oolter's, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in rolling colters for plows, and particularly to providingimproved means for pivotally securing the colter-arm, providing for lateral and vertical adjustment of the colter, and means for securing the parts in desired adj ustment.
With these ends in view my invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, as herein after described, and set forth in the claims.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a view in perspective from the rear right of a fragment of a plow-beam and a colter attached thereto,- illustrating my invention; Fig. 1, a fragment of Fig. 1, hereinafter lettered and explained; Fig. 2, a side elevation of supporting plate and arm; Fig. 3, a perspective comprising the supporting-arm and fastening bolts and keys.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
A represents a fragment of the front portion of a plow-beam severed transversely under the binding-yoke B.
Plate 0, which forms .an essential feature in the construction of my invention, is provided with an upper face portion, as a, adapted to rest against the bottom portion of the beam A, and to secure it thereto side wings, as b, are provided, having on their under side a countersink c, as shown in Fig. 1, and a perforation c. The yoke B having correspondin g perforations, bolts, as d, are passed through the perforation c in the wings I), one on each side of the beam and through the perforations in the yoke B, and nuts e turned thereon, thus securing the plate 0 to the beam A.
To provide for vertical and lateral adj ustment of the rolling colter, the lower face portion of the plate 0 is made concave or circularin cross-section, as shown at z in Fig. 2,
and is provided with parallel arms f, projected from the body portion of said plate, the inner face g of said 'arms to be circular in crosssection to conform with the circle Z of the body portion 0. For the purpose of this application I have shown slots, as h, extending about centrally from one end portion to the other, the object of which is to provide means whereby the depending supporting arm D may be adjusted laterally or transversely to the line of draft of the plow. The head portion E of the arm D, on its outer upper sur face portion, is convexed, as shown in Fig. 3, and adapted to the concave portion of the plate 0, as shown in Fig. 2.
a I would not limit myself to the use of the slot h described, as a series of perforations may be used to accomplish the same purpose, if preferred, in which case, however, the removal of the bolts k, by which the head E of arm D is secured to the plate for the purpose of adjustment, would be necessary; but, as shown in Fig. 1, it is only necessary to slack the bolts 10 to move the head for either a vertical or lateral adjustment. For the former the head is rocked in the circular face of the plate 0, and for the latter is moved transversely to the line of draft.
The wings m, of the head E extend outwardly from the head, as shown,.in line with the line of draft, and are provided wit-h oblong apertures n, through which bolts, as k, are passed and by which the head is secured in adjustment.
At the front end portion of the colter-arm F is provided a sleeve 19, adapted to embrace the arm D, the rear portion of the arm bifurcated, the prongs q extending rearwardly on eachside of and to the central portion of the colter G, to which the said colter is pivotally secured, the said sleeve loosely secured to the arm D by inserting the key 4 in the perforation 8.
It will be evident that to adjust the colter either vertically or laterally it will only be necessary to slack the nuton the bolts lawhen the arm F may be raised or lowered by rocking the head portion E of the arm D in the convex portion of the plate 0, and for lateral adjustment the head E may be moved transversely to the line of draft and secured in desired adjustment by tightening the aforesaid bolts. It will be further noticed that the space occupied under the beams by the depending portions is unusually small and not projecting down in front of the eolter, thereby interfering with the operation of the colter as well as the plow.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a plow-beam A, of the plate 0, having its lower face portion circular in cross-section, arms f and 1), bolts (Z, and yoke B,whereby the plate 0 is secured to the beam, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the beam A, the plate 0, having its lower face portion circular in cross-section, an arm D, having a convex head portion E, having perforations at, and means for securing said head in desired adjustment with the plate 0, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the beam A, the plate 0, having side projecting arms f, provided with slots h, the under surface of said plate being circular in cross-section, a dcpending arm, as D,having a convex head portion, as E, adapted to rock in the circular face of the plate 0.
4. In combination with the beam A, plate 0, having a concaved lower face. portion, parallel arms f, circular in cross-section, slots h, arm D, having a convex head E, adapted to rock in said concave in line with the draft and to move laterally, a colter G, arm F, having a sleeve portion, as p, loosely secured about an arm, as D, and means for securing said arm in desired adjustment with the plate 0, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. In combination, the colter G, colter-arm F, supporting-arm D, having a convex head E, adapted for lateral adjustment, a supporting-plate, as C, having a concaved under portion and parallel arms circular in cross-section, and means for securing said head in desired lateral adjustment on said plate or arms, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of April, A. D. 1889.
THOMAS C. BELDING.
