UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER A. MCCORD, OF LAURENS COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA.
COMBINED PAPER H OLDER, CUTTER, AND PRINTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 407,489, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed November 16, 1887. Serial No. 255,301. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUTHER A. MOCORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurens county, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Paper Holder, Cutter, and Printing Device; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to roll-paper holders and printing and cutting devices; and it consists in the novel construction and combination hereinafter specified and claimed.
The nature of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front View of my improved combined paper roll and printing and cutting device. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side View thereof.
Referring to the said drawings by letter, A A represent side posts or walls of an upright frame, and B B the top and base thereof, united together in any suitable manner, but preferably by bolts, as shown.
In each of the side posts A, I form diagonal slots 0, to provide journal-bearings for the gudgeons of a paper roll, hereinafter mentioned.
The letters D D indicate pendent arms, preferably hinged to the top plate B, as shown at a, and are provided with extensions 0, to form journal-bearings for printing and inking rollers therein secured.
E indicates a printing-roller. It is a cylinder, upon which I place a strip of rubber d, upon which the letters or characters I desire to print are formed in the usual manner.
F and G indicate inking-rollers,which have their bearings, respectively, in the bifurcated arm D and extensions 0, as shown. These rollers press against each other, and the lower one presses also against the printing-roller in the manner set forth on Fig. 3 of the drawings. The bearings of the inking-rollers are preferably slotted to aid in securing perfect contact between them and the printing-roller.
f indicates a spring, which is arranged between the top plate of the frame and the arm D, for the purpose of obtaining a constant pressure of the printing-roller against the roll of paper to be printed.
H represents a roll of paper arranged upon a shaft the ends or gudgeons of which rest and have their bearings in the slots 0 of the side posts.
K indicates a spring the upper end of which is secured to the plate B, while its lower end rests against the paper roll. Two or more of these springs are arranged on the machine. At the extreme lower end of these springs I attach a knife L, which serves to cut the paper when desired.
M represents a holder for twine, preferably arranged upon the top of the frame.
To operate my machine I take hold of the loose end of paper upon the roll and draw it downward. This movement unwinds the paper from the roll, which at the same time is passed under the printing-roller, rotates said roller and the inking-rollers, and is printed. WVhen the paper is drawn off to the extent desired, it is raised upward against the knife L and is severed from the roll.
The prime object of my invention is to provide a means whereby rolls of paper may be printed at different places, so that when a person draws off a piece of paper of sufficient size to wrap a bundle the friction of the paper roll on the printing-roll will cause the same to print a label on the paper.
The inking and printing rolls are protected from dust and the like by means of a shield, as more fully shown in Fig. 3.
It should be here observed that my whole device is portable and sufficiently small to be conveniently placed upon a store-counter or other support.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination of the upright frame having the notched standards for the journals of the paper roll, the cutter secured to spring-arms connected with the main frame, the arms hinged to the top of the said frame, and the printing and inking rolls journaled in the said arms, whereby the paper may be printed and severed at will, the drawing of the paper operating the printing and inking rolls, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUTHER A. McCORD.

G. F. LITTLE.
