Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. ATTERBURY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS FOR ORNAMENTING OPEN-ENDED GLASSWARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,693, dated July 9, 1889.
7 Application filed March 12,1889. Serial No. 302,958. (No model.)
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. ATTERBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Ornamenting Open-Ended Glassware; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invent-ion relates to an improved device for ornamenting open-ended glassware,
such as hand-blown lampchimneys, shades,
globes, &c.
The object of myinvention is to construct a device by which I am enabled to ornament lamp-chimneys, lamp-shades, 850., With various ornaments in depression or relief, as well as to give to the same irregular forms in the way of moldings, flutings, and the like, which has heretofore been found impracticable.
The invention consists in a novel construction of former having the ornamental con fi guration to be given to the article formed or cut in the inner face thereof, and a plunger or movable bottom to give to the article a flaring or fluted edge, and with a blow-snap to hold the articleand permit the same to be.
blown to fill the still plastic glass into the ornamented portion of the former.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of the former, showing a lamp-chimney held by a blow-snap, and showin g the movable bottom to the former to give the ornamented configuration to the top of the article. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of one form of movable bottom. Fig. 3 is a view of a lamp-chimney ornamented with the form of holder shown in Fig. 1.
A suitable frame Alias mounted thereon a divided former 15, having on its inner face the ornamental configuration it is desired to give to the article, and which can be in any desired form to give to the article any desired ornamentation in depression or relief, and which former is provided with an open end, as shown at B, to accommodate the size of the article. This former B'is shown as made in two parts divided vertically and hinged or otherwise joined at one side and having a suitable catch or holder at the other. The former may, however, consist of two or more jaws to close in on the article, if found desirable.
The lower end of the former B is'made flaring and is fluted or corrugated to give to the end of the article the flaring corrugated form, as shown at (J.
Theformer B above the contracted end of the fluted portion is provided with a depressed ornamented portion D, (shown in this instance as made in concave form, wit-h di agonally-arranged flutes to give to the article a convex fluted ornamental surface, and showing one form of ornamentation that may be given to the article. The plug, plunger, or movable bottom E is madein cylindrical form, with its upper end made tapering, and with said tapering portion fluted or corrugated to correspond to the fluted or corrugated portion of the former B, and in connection therewith to give to the end or top of' the article the flaring corrugated form. The plug or plunger moves or plays in a suitable guideway in the frame, and is operated by a foot-lever F, but may be operated in any preferred way.
If desired, the plug or plunger may be connected to act in connection with the former or mold by the samelever.
As has before been stated, any desired ornamentation maybe given to the former, and the same may be made of any desired length to ornament more or less of the article.
The operation of the device is as follows: The article having been given its desired shape by handas, for instance, a lampchimney, as shown-the same is connected to the blow-snap and the end inserted in the glory-hole to reheat it. The end is then placed in the enlarged end of the former and thrust down upon the plug or plunger, to
which the pressure is then applied, which will mental configuration to be given to the article formed or cut in the inner face thereof, a plug to close the bottom thereof, and a device for holding; the article and permitting the same to be blown to fill the still plastic glass into the ornamented portion of the former, asset forth.
2. In a device for ornamel'iting" hand-blown glassware, a former or mold having the ornamental configuration to be given to the art1 cle formed or cut in the inner face thereof, a 20 plug or plunger provided with the corrugated face to crimp the edge of the article, and a blow-snap to hold the article, substantially as and for the purpose set forth In testimony whereof I affix my signatm e in 25 the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS B. ATERBURY.
