Description

UNITED STATES JOSEPH J. GREEN,
4PATENT OEEICE.l
OF CANTON, OHIO.
Horst SPECIFICATION lforming part of Letters Patent No. 406,579, dated July 9, 1889. Application tiled August 31, ISSS. Serial No. 284,260. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Ioists; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation ot the sheaves, showing the different parts properly attached.l Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the top or upper sheave, showing the opposite side from that shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the top or upper sheave. Figs. 4. are detached views of the locking-segment. Fig. 5 is a view of a portion of the top or upper sheave, showing the locking devices in dotted lines in position for releasing.
The present invention has relation to hoists and its nature consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the top or upper sheave-block, which is substantially of the form shown, and is provided with the hook a, which may be attached in the ordinary manner. Vithin the sheaveblocl; A are located the grooved pulleys a and d2, said pulleys rotating on the bolt b. The sheave-bloek- B is substantially of the forni shown, and is provided with two pulleys. The rope C is attached to the eye b by means of the hook c, or its equivalent, and extends down under one of the pulleys in the sheave-block B, thence over one of the pulleys in the sheave-block A, thence under the second pulley in the sheave-block B, and inally over the second pulley in the sheaveblock A, said rope being arranged substantially as illustrated in the drawings.
The lever D is pivotally attached to the sheave-block A, and is substantiallyof the 5o form shown. This lever D is provided with the pind, which is for the purpose hereinafter described.
The segment E is pivotally attached to the sheave-block A by means of the bolt e', con- 55 necting it with the projection e2 on vsaid sheave-block, and is provided with the extension or arm F, said extension or arm being provided' with the elongated slot d, which is for the purpose of receiving the pin d, located 6o on the outer end of the lever D,as illustrated in the drawings. p
For the purpose of operating the segment E, the pendent arm G is provided, running from and formed integral with the lower part of the lever D. The bottom or lower end of said arm is provided with the eye II, which is for the purpose of receiving the rope C. The segment E is provided with the groove e, said groove being' provided with the teeth f, 7o which are for the' purpose of locking the rope C at any desired point. It will be seen that as the free end of the rope C is carried or drawn outward the pendent arm G will be moved outward, thereby releasing the segment E from the rope C by means of the pin d and the elongated slot d', when the rope C is free to be moved in either direction. lVhen it is desired to lock the rope C, the free end is drawn or permitted t0- go inward, when 8o the segment E engages the rope C and securely locks the same, thereby holding the weight at any desired point.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a sheave-bloek and its rope, of a lever and a segment pivoted at different points to the sheave-bloek, said lever having a pin engaging with a slot in 9o the segment, whereby the movement of the lever controls the movements of the segment to hold or release the rope, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the sheave-blocks A and B, the rope C, the leverD, provided with the pin d, the pendent arm G, provided with the eye I-I, and the segment E, provided with the extension 0r arm F, having the elongated In testimony that I claim the above have slot CF, suhstzultally :1s and for the purpose I hereunto subscribed my nmnein the presence ro described. of two witnesses.
3. The Combination of thesheave-bloeksA D Y Y T and B, the rope C, the lever D. provided with JObEl H J GREEN the pendent arm G and eye H, the segment Vtnesses: E, the groove @,and the teethf, substantially as and for the purpose described.
