SECTIONAL LOCKING PU LLEY-BLOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,541, dated June 18, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL GEORGE EMER- SON, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of Belleville, in the county of Hastings and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which 'form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a partly-broken-away front view of this invention, showing the pulley open. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the pulley closed and fastened. Fig. 3 is a view of a fork such as may be used with my invention.

This invention has relation to sectional locking-pulleys for hoisting apparatus designed especially for handling slings or forks; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates one block-section of the pulley, and B the other section. 0 indicates a sling, and D a clevis-connection for a fork, the pulley being designed for use in connection with a carrier Z and such sling or fork as the occasion may require.

The sections A and B are provided each with a traveling sheave E, pivoted between the parallel walls F of the block-section near its inner edge, as indicated at G, and H represents a guiding-sheave pivoted in a location upward and outward from the main sheave, the guiding-sheave being near the upper and outer corner of each block-section of the pulley. These sheaves engage the draft-rope 6. At the outer and lower corner of each block section is provided a depending swivel hook or catch K, applied to a crossbar having arms K pivoted to the walls of the block-section and swinging down through its open bottom, and to the inner corner of each block-section, in the line of the meeting edge aof said section, is

attached a depending lug L. These lugs are perforated similarly, as shown at b, so that when the pulley-sections come together in looking position the hook of the fork can be connected to the pulley by engagement with a clevis D, secured in position by a bolt passing through these perforations. The swivelhooks are designed to engage the end. rings of the sling when the latter is used instead of a fork.

The section Ais provided with edge notches or catches 0, opening upward, and the section B with downwardly-turned edge hooks d, adapted to engage the catches a when the sections are brought together under the action of the draftrope e. To the notched section A is secured at'its upper and inner corner the upwardly-projecting headed catch I, which, when the pulley is drawn upward, is designed to enter the lock of the carrier Z, which may be of the usual character.

The sections A and B may be drawn apart for attachment to the ends of the sling under a load, and as the draft-rope is operated the sling will be drawn up around the load and the sections will be brought together and locked, and the section A will be positively connected to the carrier and will sustain the weight of its fellow section and the load.

The sections are used in locked position with the fork.

A sectional lockingblock for hoisting purposes, consisting of the block-section A, having the carrier-catch I, the sheave, the depending sling-catch, and the meeting-edge locking notches and perforated lug, in combination with the section B, having similar sheave and depending sling-catch and meeting-edge locking-hooks, and a perforated lug, substantially as specified.
