ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,808, dated June 4, 1889.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER B. WALL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Colchester, in the county of McDonough and ful Improvements in Elevators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in elevators; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an automatically-operating device which will engage the bottom of the cage or car as the latter ascends to each landing and secure the same in position with its floor on the level of the floor of the landing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of the elevator-shaft casing provided with devices embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, illustrating in solid lines the position of the devices when the car has descended, and showing in dotted lines the position of the devices when tripped out of the path of the ear. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the car-supporting devices in position to engage the bottom of the car when 0 effecting a landing.
A represents the elevator-shaft, which is of the usual or any suitable construction, and is provided on one side with a pair of vertical parallel uprights B. The usual guide-timbers 3 5 C are secured in opposite sides of the elevator-shaft.
D represents a bell-crank lever, which is pivoted between the uprights B by a bolt or pin E, which engages bearings F, secured to 40 the inneredges of the uprights, and the inner end of the bent lever is provided with a downwardly-extended curved cam-arm G, the faces of which are covered with metallic straps H, to reduce friction and prevent wear.
I represents a saddle-block, which is arranged between the uprights B at a slight distance above the pivot of the bent lever D, and is pivoted on a pin or bolt K. A shoulder L is formed at the inner end of the saddleblock on the bottom thereof.
State of Illinois, have invented new and use- M represents a detent-link, which is pivoted at its outer end between a pair of cars formed by bifurcating the upper end of the bent lever D. The said link rides on the saddle and is retained between the sides thereof, and has near its inner end on its lower side a shoulder or offset-N, which is adapted to engage the shoulder L. At the extreme inner end of the link is a shoulder O, and on the upper side thereof, near its inner end, is a stud or 6c ear P.
R represents a rocking board, which has a shaft S secured to its outer edge, and the said shaft is arranged transversely at one side of the well or casing and has its ends journaled in bearings T. A pair of cleats U are secured to the opposing sides of the well-casing, and are adapted to form supports for the rocking board when the latter is at the lower limit of its movement. An arm V projects upward from the rocking board at a suitable distance from its pivoted edge, and is connected to the stud or ear P of the link M by means of a chain IV. A rod may be substituted for this chain, if preferred.
X represents an S-shaped trigger, which is pivoted by a pin or bolt Y in a notch formed on the inner edge of the rocking board at the center thereof. The upper arm Z of the trigger is adapted to project within the path of the car or cage A, and the lower arm B of the trigger is adapted to engage the shoulder 0 at the inner end of the link M. A weight 0' is suspended from the bent leverD at a point near the outer end thereof.
The apparatus is in itsinitial position when the shoulder N of the link M is in engagement with the shoulder L of the saddle I' and when the lower arm B of the trigger is in engagement with the shoulder O of the link M and the upper arm Z of the trigger is projected within the path of the cage or car, as illustrated in solid lines in Fig. 2. WVhen the cage or car ascends, the bottom thereof clears the cam-arm G of the lever D without en- 5 gaging the same, and when it reaches the arm Z of the trigger it swings the latter backward out of the way and passes the same, as will be readily understood. Then the car descends, its bottom engages the arm Z of the trigger and raises the arm 13 thereof by partly turning the trigger on its pivot, thus causing the said arm B by engagement with the shoulder O of link M to raise said link to the height sufficient to clear its shoulder N of the shoulder L of the saddle, as shown in Fig. The chain or rod W, which connects the arm V of the rocking board R to the stud or arm P of link M, prevents the latter from being raised any higher, and the cleats U prevent the rocking board from being depressed with the trigger to a lower position, and hence the trigger remains with its lower arm in engagement with shoulder O of the link and its upper arm in engagement with the bottom of the car or cage, and the latter is supported at the landing, so that it cannot possibly fall. In order to enable the car or cage to continue its descent, it must be first raised slightly to relieve the pressure on the trigger X, and at the instant that the latter is clear the weight 0, attached to the bent lever D,will depress the upper end of said bent lever, and the shoulder N of link M, being clear of the shoulder L of the saddle, as before stated, will draw the said link M outward on the bottom of the saddle, and thereby cause the chain or rod \V to raise the rocking board R, and consequently raise the trigger X with the said rocking board to a position out of the path of the bottom of the car or cage, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. hen the bent lever D is thus depressed by the weight (3, the cam-arm G of said lever will be moved inward in the swell or casing to a position within the path of the bottom of the car or cage, and as the latter descends it will engage the said cam-arm, and hence operate the bent lever D and cause the latter to restore the link M, the rocking board, and the trigger to their initial position, and thus set the apparatus and adapt it to operate as before on the next ensuing ascent of the car or cage.
It will be understood that as many sets of my improved apparatus will be employed as there are landings in the building, one set of the apparatus being used for each landing.
Having thus described my invention, I clai1n- 1. The combination, with the weighted camlever D, of the link M, the swinging support connected to the link, and the trigger X, pivoted in said swinging support, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the weighted camlever D, the saddle or support I, the link M, connected to lever D and adapted to engage the saddle, the pivoted board or support R, connected to the link, and the trigger X, pivoted to said board or support and having the arms Z and B, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
The combination of the weighted lever D,having the cam-arm G, the saddle or support I, the link M, connected to lever D and having the shoulder adapted to engage the saddle or support, the rocking board or support R, the chain or connection between the same and the link, the trigger X, having the arms Z and B, for the purpose set forth, and the car adapted to engage and operate the cam G and trigger X, substantially as described.
l. The combination, with the pivoted board or support R and the trigger X, swinging therein, of the weighted lever, and the link M and the chain connecting the weighted lever to the pivoted board or support R, to raise said swinging board or support R, substantially as described.
5. The pivoted support or board R, combin ed with the weighted lever D, having camarm G, the link M, and the chain connecting the board R and the lever D, and the trigger X on the board R, to engage the lever D, as set forth.
