OTTO G. ZERSE AND SILAS T. YOUN T, OF LAFAYETTE, INDIANA.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,762, dated June 4, 1889.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, OTTO G. ZERSE and SILAs T. YOUNT, of Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Syringes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in vaginal syringes, and its object is to improve the construction of the drainage-bulb by providing it with a distending annulus; and it consists in the hereinafter-described novel construction of such annulus and in the combi-. nation of parts hereinafter specified.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of ourimproved device in connection with an ordinary bulb syringe, and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view of our device detached from the syringe.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates a tube of suitable dimensions, and constructed, preferably, of vuleanite or other poor conductor of heat and non-corrosive material. form or enlarged, as shown, and is provided with a series of perforations near its extremity, in order that the injected liquid may reach all parts of the internal mucous membrane. The tube at its opposite end is provided with a screw-threaded socket a, by which it is attached to the threaded connection of the syringe, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The letter 13 indicates an oblong flexible d rainage-bulb, constructed, preferably, of soft rubber. The said bulb at the forward end or portion to be applied to the vagina is provid ed with a large opening, in which is fitted an annulus b, of hard rubber or other suitable material, to keep the bulb distended at such point, so that the injected liquid may readily pass into the bulb, as more fully hereinafter described. In order that the annulus may be securely held in the opening, it is provided with an annular groove on its outside, into which the material of the bulb at the 'ternal parts of the labia.
One end of the tube is bulbous in.

edge of the opening springs, and the outer edge of the annulus is beveled or rounded, so as to fit the mouth of the bulb neatly and prevent injury to the vagina when the device is applied. The rear end of the bulb, directly opposite the large opening at the forward end, is provided with a smaller opening, of such size as to closely fit around the tube A and prevent leakage, while at the same time it will permit the tube to be adjusted longitudinally, so as to project to a greater or less extent through the large opening at the forward end and permit the tube to enter the vagina to any suitable extent in the treatment ofdiseases. The bulb is also provided with a small opening at one side, in which is fitted a short tubular connection l), to which one end of a drainage-tube O is secured.
. In using our improved device the tube is properly adjusted in the bulb, so as to project the desired extent from its forward end. The device is then inserted, the bulbous end of the tube and the forward end of the bulb entering the vagina, or the forward portion of the bulb may merely bear against the ex- The injection is then effected in the usual manner, the reflux passin freely into the distended mouth of the bulb, escaping from the bulb through the drainage-tube.
As constructed it will be perceived that the device may be used with any suitable syringe, thus making it universal in application. Being extremely simple in construction, it may be readily cleaned and is comparatively inexpensive, and as the forward end of the bulb may be inserted into the vagina it may be used as a vaginal dilator by with the drainage-bulb B on said tube tightly our own We affix our signatures in presence of fitting" the same at lts rear end, but havlng a two Witnesses.

connected to bulb B, all. substantially as and Vitncsscs:
for the purpose specified. \V. \V. KURROUGHS,
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as \VERDIE P. SMITH.
