UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BRINKMANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RATCHET-DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,592, dated June 4, 1889.
i Application tiled February 25, 1889. Serial No. 301,022. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY BRINKMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Drills, of which the following is so full, clear, and eX- act a description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing'.
My invention relates to machines for drilling metal, and is intended to supply thelongfelt want of a machine which can be run continually and which will rot be liable to friction.
The drawing is a side View of the device.
A is the stem of the machine, provided at its upper extremity with an adjusting-screw B. Rigidly attached to said stem at suitable distances are two circular blocks C and C', respectively, each provided with a series of recesses c c, cut into their horizontal upper faces. Immediately above said blocks (which I call permanent ratchet-blocks 77) are correspondingly-recessed ratchet-blocks D and D', which revolve upon said stem, and which are each provided with a handle E and E. At
the top of the stem, and just beneath the adjusting-screw, is a boss F, extending around the periphery of the stem. Between the boss F and the top of the movable ratchet-block D, and also between the permanent ratchet-block C and the movable block D', are placed coiled springs G and G', respectively. Washers H at the base of said springs serve to prevent said springs from interfering with the motion of the movable ratchet-blocks. The lower extremity of the stem A is provided with a socket I, for the reception of the drill K. As will be readily seen by reference to the drawing, the device described herein can be kept running almost continuously by the alternating rotation of the movable ratchet-blocks by use of the handles, the coiled springs servingto keep the ratchets properly in place.
The many advantages of my device Will be readily seen and appreciated by those having occasion to use such machines, and the slmplicity and durability of its construction ren- 5o der it especially desirable.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown and described, as many details of construction may be varied or mechanical equivalents substi- .tilted without departing from the spirit of my -invention or in any way interfering with its usefulness.
Having now described the construction, ob-
jects, and uses of my invention, what I be- 6o ing recesses cut into their upper horizontal faces, in combination with movable blocks having recesses cut into their lower horizontal faces and adapted to correspond with the ratchet formed by the recesses in said permanent blocks, said movable ratchet-blocks hav- 7o ing-handles rigidly secured to them, substantially as describe( .v
2. In a ratchet-drill, a stem having ratchetblocks rigidly secured thereto, said rigid blocks having recesses cut in their upper faces, 7 5
in combination with movable ratchet-blocks adapted to rotate upon said stem and resting on the tops of said rigid blocks, and coiledA springs on the tops of said movable blocks for holding said movable blocks in place inde- 8o pendently, said movable blocks provided with handles rigidly secured thereto, substantially as described.
In` testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL I-IINsEMAN,J1-., W. W. DICKHART.
