ALVIN S. BOICE, OF NEW RICHLAND, MINNESOTA.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,516, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed August 15, 1888. Serial No. 282,760. (Model) T0 64% whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALVIN S. BOIOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Richland, in the county of Waseca and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combination-locks; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of locks of that class, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an interior view of my improved combination-lock. Fig. 2 is an interior view, certain parts being removed and the main bolt being represented as shot. Figs. 3 to 15, inclusive, are detail views of various parts. of the lock mechanism.
A designates the main bolt of the lock, which is pivoted at a to a vertical lever B, the foot of which is pressed by a spring Z), which forces the main bolt out when the bolt is released, as hereinafter mentioned.
0 indicates a swinging catch, which is pivoted on a post 0, which isfixed to the lockplate, the said catch being formed to connect with a stud or projection a on the bolt A when said bolt is retracted, and also provided with an arm 0, extending downward and hooking on one arm of an angular lever D, which swings on a fixed post d, and is pivotally connected at cl with one end of a sliding bar E. The bar E is in position, as shown, to press against a loose trigger F, the form of which is shown in Fig. 14. Y The said trigger is held in place between the guides e, and an aperture is made in the face-plate of the look, through which the trigger extends when pressed out by the bar E.
G indicatesa plug which is formed with a square aperture to receive a thumb-piece or night-key I, and has an arm or projection f to engage with other parts, as hereinafter stated.
H indicates a pivoted catch, said catch being pivoted to the lock-plate, under the bolt A, at e, and having a projecting stud e A spring 0 tends to raise the catch H, so that when the bolt A is shot the stud e is brought to the bolt back of a shoulder 0 The catch H is provided with a bent arm h, which is in position to be engaged by the arm f on the plug G when the latter is turned by means of the thumb-piece I.
L designates a plug having a square aperture, through which is passed the knob-spindle. This plug, as well as the plug G, is shouldered and set in bearings in the lock-plates, and may be rotated therein. At its forward edge the plug L is provided with a small pro-- j ection or nipple 'm.
- M indicates a plate provided with an opening which is surrounded with an annular flangen, which fits around the plug L, and is provided with a plane or straight portion 0" on one side. The plate M is formed with a shoulder a, an arm n extending downward, and guides 0 for the combination-pin q. The plug L has an aperture 13 formed therein, and plate M has a similar aperture 19, which apertures may be brought in line with the combination-pin by turning the plug and plate around.
K indicates a long crooked lever, with its upper end against the upper part of the easing. The said lever extends downward, closing about the plate M, as shown, the lower end of the lever being formed and in position to connect with an angular projection of the catch H, and also to connect with the lever B. The lever K is held in place by a spring 8' and a projection s at the top of the case, and
by means of this lever, when engaged by plate M, the bolt A may be released from the catch H and retracted.
N indicates a rocking lever, which is pivoted on a fixed post 2?, the upper end of said lever being pivotally connected with a push-button O, which moves between the guides to in an aperture in the face-plate of the look. A spring a, fastened to lever N, presses against a shoulder e on the push-button and tends to move thelower end of lever N toward the tumblers. The lower end of the lever N is loosely connected by the notch and stud o with a movable bar P, from which a curved arm it) extends upward. The combinationpin q, as shown in Fig. 3, has'a recessed or grooved head to connect loosely with the curved arm '20 of the movable bar P, so that Y the pin is moved horizontally in either direction by the movement of the lever N.
The tumblers fit around the flange n. of the plate M, and two of them are formed with notches 00, to admit the larger part or head of the pin (1 when the pin enters the holes 17 and 19 in the plate M and plug L when the combination is on. Three tumblers are shown, being severally indicated by R, R, and R with two intervening washers S, the inner edges of which are formed with the straight portions y to close against the plane 1' on the flange 'n of plate M.
The tumbler B, being the first to be put in place on the plate M, has a lip to connect with a tongue .2" on the next tumbler R. The tumbler R has a fixed pin or projection which extends through one of the holes z in the uppermost tumbler R 011 the tumbler R placed an annular plate or fiat ring T, which is provided with an outward projection .2, which connects with the pin .2 which extends through the tumbler R The ring T fits about the plug L and is notched on its inner edge, and the nipple in on the plug enters one of the notches in the ring. The connection is thus formed between the knob-spindle and the several tumblers, and by the use of different notches in the ring T and the several holes in the tumbler R many different combinations may be formed. The lever N, being actuated by the spring a, presses forward the pin q, and when the combination is on, the apertures in L and M being in line with the pin and the tumblers being turned to position to receive the head of the pin, the latteris driven into the apertures 19 and p, and connection is formed between the knob-spindle and the long lever K. By pressing in the push-button O the combination-pin is withdrawn from the plug L through the action of leverN and bar 1, and the combination may be thrown.
hen the door is open, the bolt A being retracted, the trigger F projects through the face-plate F of the lock, the catch 0 being kept by a spring (6 in connection with the stud a on the bolt, so that the bolt is locked inward, and when the door is closed the trigger is pressed in by contact with the plate on the door-casing and presses backward the bar E, which, through lever 1), brings down the catch G from connection with the stud (t', and the bolt is driven forward by the spring I) and the lever B. As the bolt is driven out, the pivoted catch H is raised by the spring 0 bringing the stud c to the bolt just back of the shoulder a, and thus locks the bolt out ward, so that it cannot be pressed inward by pressure against the head or .lfoi'ward end of the bolt.
The thumb piece or key I is used from the inside in connection with the pivoted catch II and lever B. By the use of this key the door may be unlocked whether the combination is on or oil, the plug G being turned so that the arm f presses down the curved arm 7b of the catch II and then presses back the lever 1%, thus retracting the bolt. 13y partially turning the key I to the right, so that the arm f is turned upward against the catch II, a solid lock is made of bolt A each time the door is closed, and it cannot be retracted by means of the knob-spindle until the key is turned to the left. The plug G is retained in its different positions by the spring 7s.
When the combination is on and connection is formed between the plug L and the plate M, the bolt may be retracted by turning the knob-spindle in either direction, the plate M engaging lever K and said lever pressing dowmvard the catch II and then moving against the lever B, pressing it backward. The bolt is thus retracted, and so remains until the door is closed, when the bolt is again shot by the action of the trigger F. The combination-pin being withdrawn from plug L, by pressing inward the push-button, the combination may be thrown by turning the knobspindle by which the plug L is rotated within the flange a of plate M.
The trigger F is formed with its edge somewhat rounded for contact with the plate on the door-casing, and is so constructed that it cannot be driven entirely out from. the lock ease by the sliding bar E.
The bolt A is somewhat beveled, and may be made to operate as a spring-catch by turning the plug G with the key I, so that the arm f of the plug bears down the arm h of the catch H and holds it so that the stud c is not in position to connect with the bolt. Then, the door being open, press in the trigger F, driving out the bolt A, and the door may then be closed, the bolt yielding to pressure in the ordinary way.
The combination may be found when desired by using a piece of bent wire Q, (800 Fig. 1.5,) the prongs of said wire being passed through two small holes .9 in the lock-plate. The ends of the wire come in contact with the lirst tumbler near its edge, and the tumblers are then turned until their notches register with the wire.
I claim- 1. In combination with the loclebolt, a pivoted catch adapted to connect with said bolt when retracted, a loose trigger constructed to project through the face-plate of the lock and to be pressed inward, a sliding bar in position to engage with said trigger, and a suitable device connecting said bar with said catch, by which the said bolt maybe released, substantially as set forth and described.
The combination, with the main bolt, of a lever connected therewith and provided with a spring which is adapted to thrust forward said belt, a pivoted catch adapted to detain said bolt when retracted, a sliding bar,a loose trigger constructed to project through the faceq ilate of the lock, to be pressed inward, and to engage said sliding bar, and a pivoted angular lever which is loosely con- ITS nected with said catch and the sliding bar, substantially as set forth and described.
3. The combination, with the main bolt provided with a shoulder 0 of a pivoted catch H, provided with a stud e in position to connect with said bolt, a spring-lever adapted to drive said bolt, and a rotative plug G, provided with an arm and adapted to engage said pivoted catch and said spring-lever successively, substantially as set forth and described.
4. In a lock, in combination with the knobspindle, a circular plug fitting on said spindle and provided with a nipple m and an aperture 19, a plate M, provided with an annular flange fitting around the said plug and provided with an aperture, with which the aperture 19 may be brought in line, a pin supported in position to enter said apertures and provided with means for projecting and withdrawing it, a series of notched tumblers adapted for engagement with said plug and said pin, a lock-bolt, a pivoted catch constructed to lock said bolt after it is driven forward, and a lever .K, constructed to engage with plate M and with said pivoted catch, substantially as set forth and described.
6. In combination with the knob-spindle,
the rotative plug L, fitting thereon and pro vided with a nipple m, the notched ring T, with projection z, and a series of tumblers adapted to be engaged by said ring, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
