ADJUSTABLE SPLIT PU LLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,902, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed January 31, 1889. Serial No. 298,283. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY C. BAILEY, of Edinburg, county of Johnson, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Split Pulleys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention belongs to that class of devices commonly known as split pulleys, and is intended to provide means for clamping the hub-sections upon different-sized shafts, and will be understood from the following description.

The construction herein shown is an improvement upon that described in a former application filed by me on the 17th of January, 1889, Serial No. 296,677.
The pulley is made in two parts, whose edges abut against each other on the line X X, w being the web. This is formed of two layers of Wood separated from each other, so as to leave a recess between them wide enough to admit the hub-section with its flange, and one of these is inserted in each half of the pulley, and is secured therein by hinge-bolts 3 and 4 and by bolts passing through slots 1 1 2 2, elongated to allow the travel of the flanges upon the bolts while the adjustment of the hub-opening to the shaft is being made. The hub his also formed in two sections, as shown, having a squared central opening through which passes the shaft 8. so is a set-screw, which may be tapped through the boss of the hub, having a bearing against the shaft to assist in lockin g the hub thereon. The flanges f f of the hub-sections are made alike, except that their ends are reversed when set in place in the sections of the web, the hinge bolt 3 being at one side of the upper flange and the hinge-bolt 4 being at the opposite side of the lower flange, and the slots 1 and 2 are correspondingly located, as shown. The hub and flange sections being set in the recess of the Web, the hinge-bolts 3 and 4 are put through and secured by nuts on the other side, and the securing bolts are entered through slots 1 1 2 2, as shown, and also secured by nuts on the other side of the web.
Z) are clamping-bolts, their lower ends being threaded to receive nuts, the other end formed into an eye, 6, through which passes a tapering key, It, the eye and threaded end of the bolts being alternately reversed in respect to each other, as shown. The two parts of the pulley being set the one upon the other, the key It; is driven in through the openings in the web, passing through the eye 6, and the nuts on the opposite ends of the bolt having been previously set about the point desired, this key is driven in, drawing the pulleysections toward each other, and the hub-sections are clamped firmly about the shaft Without any unnecessary strain upon the abutting edges of the sections of the pulley. The strain is thus brought directly centrally upon the hub, inasmuch as the centers of the hingebolts 3 and 4 and of the shaft 3 are directly in line with each other. By means of this key,which passes through the opening in each side of the web, the adjustment is eifected without taking the pulley apart, and,when it is desired, by knocking out the keys the sections of the pulley may be readily separated.
Ordinarily the set-screw so is not needed. It is only provided as an additional locking device, which may be used or not at the pleasure of the operator.
Fig. 2 shows a modification of the clamping device, consisting of double-ended bolts 1) with right and left hand screw-threads having nuts on each end, each bolt having a common central head, h, which may be turned with an ordinary S-wrench, a small hole being cut in the web on the division-line of the sections to admit the entrance of the head of the wrench, and it is obvious that by turning this nut the flanges will be brought together in a similar manner to that described in the device shown in Fig. 1.

2. A pulley comprising two sections abutting upon their edges, the Web thereof formed with an open space between its sides, the hub formed'in two sections having a squared shaftopening, each section integral with a flange adapted to fit in the spacesbetwejen the parts of the web, such flanges hinged to the web by bolts at one end and secured by bolts passing through slots at the central and opposite ends of the flange, such sections having openings formed on each side of the hub upon the arms of the flange for admitting clampingbolts, in combination with a pair of clamping- .bolts, one on each side of the hub-section,
means for adjusting one end of each flangesection, and clamping-bolts for drawing the flanges and pulley-sections together and securing the same at any desired point, substantially as shown and described.
3. A pulley comprising two sections, their edges abuttingupon a central line, the web in two sections with squared shaft-opening, each section formed integral with a triangular flange set in a recess of the web, hinged by suitable bolts passing through the flanges at one corner thereof and seem-east, the upper central and opposite angle by bolts passing through longitudinal slots formed in such flange, clamping-bolts passing through the arms of the flanges on each side of the hubsections, and means for drawing and locking the parts together, all combined substantially as shown and described, S
