DAMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,353, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed September 27, 1888. Serial No. 286,518. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRIsTIAN FREDERICK LANGE, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in dampers of the variety having a counter-balance and operating automatically with the varying force of the draft to equalize the latter; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In. the accompanying drawing the figure is a View in vertical section through a pipe, showing the damper therein.
A represents the damper, and B a section of round pipe to which the damper is attached, the damper usually being connected with the smoke-pipe.
C is the lever to which the damper is attached, the same being of the bell-crank variety, having an elbow at C and being pivoted at c and having a series of notches, c, for engaging pin cl of poise D, by means of which the poise is adjusted endwise of the lever. Pipe B is provided with a slot, b, through which the damper-lever extends, the pipe at this part being re-enforced by plate E, having a corresponding slot. Plate E has a pair of flanges, e, that embrace lever C and to which the lever is pivoted, a cap, 6', that connects the flanges on top, serving as a stop for lever C in the depressed position of the damper. Lever C is provided with a hub, 0 the circular side of which is concentric with the axis of the lever, and by engaging the end walls of slot 1) prevents any material leakage where the lever enters the pipe. Member C is of course of the same thickness as the lever, and it and the lever fit nicely between flanges e.
The damper in its elevated or closed position (shown in dotted lines) fits the pipe loosely, leaving room enough for the escape of gases and for the accumulation of more or less soot on the inside of the pipe without af-' fecting the damper. Owing to the elbow in lever C and to the distance from the elbow to the axis of the lever, the relation of parts is such that the damper in its depressed or normal position (shown in solid lines) stands approximately in the center of the pipe, and from thence may move to its elevated position (shown in dotted lines) without rubbing the pipe.
The damper when depressed is in such inclined position that the draft may act on the under surface thereof, thereby tending to elevate or close the damper, poise D having been adjusted to nearly balance the damper in the depressed position of the latter. The poise is at its maximum leverage when the damper is depressed, and is at its minimum leverage when the damper is elevated or closed.
A moderate draft will only change the damper slightly, and it requires a strong draft to entirely close the damper, and the latter, being quite sensitive, vibrates with the changing force of the draft and equalizes the same in its effect upon the combustion in the stove or furnace to which it is applied.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with damper, pipe, and damper-lever, the latter being of the bellcrank variety, arranged substantially as indicated, of plate E, having flanges e and cap 6, the flanges embracing the damper-lever, and the cap serving as a stop for engaging such lever when the damper is depressed, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a damper-lever of the bell-crank variety having a hub for closing the slot in the pipe, of a damper secured to one arm of said lever and a poise secured to the other arm, substantially as set forth.
