APPARATUS FOR OPERATING SAFETY-GATES 0F RAILWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,176, dated May 14., 1889.
Application filed March 21, 1888.
of railway-cars are operated by the engineer` of the train.
The invention has for its object to prevent passengers from falling off the platforms of railway cars, and to provide an operating `mechanism for opening and closing gates located at the sides of the platforms of railway passenger-cars, and which are controlled and operated from the engine of the train.
The invention consists in mechanism for operating safety-gates inclosing the platforms of railway passenger-cars connected with the engine or locomotive of the train, all constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar iigures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Fig. 11 is a View looking at the under side of a passenger-car, showing the position of the operating mechanism when the gates are closed. Fig. 12 is a similar view showing the position of the operating mechanism when the gates Serial No. 267,953. (No model.)
are open. Fig. 13 is a detail view represent ing a portionof the mechanism at the center of the car for operating the gates. Fig. 14. is a detail view showing the steam-cylinder, the piston, and a portion of the steam-supply pipes, with parts broken away, which connect with the safety-gates. Fig. 15 is a detail View of one of the brackets supporting the piston which operates the safety-gates. Fig. 16 isa detail plan view, with parts broken away, showing a portion of the operating-levers connected with the safety-gates. Fig. 17 is a side view thereof. Figs. 18 and 19 are detail views showing the brackets supporting the operating mechanism of the safety-gates. Fig. 20 is a detail view, with partsbroken away and in section, of a portion of the safety-gate-operating mechanism.
In carrying out this invention the platforms of a passenger-car are provided with gates 1, of suitable open-work material, which are located so as to cover the space between the last step of the platform and the sides and stanchions 2 of the car. The gate is mounted by means of rollers 3 on tracks 4. o. The upper tracks, 4, extend from the stanchion 2 into a pocket, 6, in the side of the car, and the lower track, 5, extends from one of the supports 7 of the steps, and is bent up with its-end secured to the bottom of the car. The lower track, 5, is formed with a projection, 8, adjacent to its forward end, and projections 9 adjacent to its rear end, whereby, when the gate is closed, the forward roller 3 will be prevented by the projection 8 from being moved back, and the rear roller 3 will be locked between the projections 9 and hold the gate from moving forward when in open position.
A gate constructed and arranged similarly to 1 is located on each side of the platform.
To operate the gates, each gate 1 is connected by means of a pivoted rod, 10, with levers 11,pivoted in brackets 12 on the under side of the car, and extending through the guide-brackets 13. rlhe inner ends of the levers 11 are provided with slotted ends 14, with which the pin 15 on a rod, 16, engages. The rod 16 extends through a guide bracket or hanger, 17, on the bottom of the car and pivotally connects with a double-ended lever, 18, mounted at about the center of the car in suitable hangers, 19. At one end of the double-'ended lever 1S is pivoted a crank-arm,
IOO
20, having` its other end pivoted to a block, 21, sliding in a frame, 22, supported at one end bya bracket, 23, on the bottom of the car, and at its other end connected to a cylinder, 24, mounted `in brackets 25, depending from the bottom of the car. The sliding block 21 has secured to it a piston-rod, 2G, having a piston-head, 27, located in the cylinder 24. The end of the cylinder 24 behind. the piston 27 connects by means of a branch pipe, 2S, with a main supply-pipe, 25), leading to the locomotive of the train. The end of the cylinder 24 in front of the piston 27 connects by means of a branch pipe, 30, with the main supply-pipe 31, leading to the locomotive.
lt will be understood from the foregoing description that each end ot a car is provided with sliding' gates 1, constructed and arranged similarly to the gates 1 already described, and connected by similar operating mechanism with the ends of the double-ended lever 1S, so that the movement ot the latter will act to open or close the gates.
In order to suitably connect the main supply- pipes 29 and 30 between the cars oii' a train, they are provided with a suitalne coupling. (Not shown in the drawings.)
'When the gates are open, as shown in Fig. 1, the operating mechanism beneath the car will be located in the position shown in Fig. 12. To close the gates, the engineer permits steam to enter the main su} )plypipe 29, which thereby acts upon the piston-head 27 and forces it forward, pulling on the rods 16 and closing the gates 1. To open the gates, steam is supplied to the pipe 31, and, acting upon the piston-head 27, i'orces it back, thereby pushing the rod 1G, and by means ol' their connections drawing back the gates 1.
It will be seen by the location et the gates that they may be conveniently slid back out of the way, and the handle i4 on the car, being located inside ci' the gates, cannot be reached when the gates are closed. Furthermore, in case of sudden swaying of the cars, passengers crossing from one car to another or standing upon the platform will. be prevented by the gates from being thrown oit of the train.
lllhile l have described a particular construction of parts, 1 do not desire to limit myself thereto, as they maybe varied in :form and arran gement without departing from the essential features of the invention.
It desired, compressed air may be employed instead of steam to operate the gates. 'lhe gates are easily operated, and will be simultaneously opened or closed, at the will of the engineer.
Havin g thus described m y invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentf 1. The combination, with the car, the iour gates at the steps thereof, of the horizontal lever 1S, pivoted between. its ends to the under side of the car, oppositcly-projecting rods 16, pivotally connected at their inner ends with the ends of said lever, two transverse levers,
