UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
BARTHOLOMEIV VISTAR AND MILES .PETTET, OF -WELLINGTON, ONTARIO,
' CANADA.
CAR-STARTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,167, dated May 14, 1889.
Applicatfoa filed March 11, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BARTHoLoMEW Wis- TAR and MILEs PETTET, the said BARTHoLo- MEW \VIsTAR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the village of \Vellington, in the county of Prince Edward and Province of Ontario, Canada, and the said MILES PETTET being a citizen of Canada, residing at WVellington aforesaid, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street- Car Starters; and we do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and I 5 use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a top view of our car-starter in position. Fig. 2 is a loiigitudinal section of the drum, shaft, and ratchet-wheel. Fig. Sis
a cross vertical section of the same on line y g of Fig. 2. v
Our invention relates to street-car starters; 2 5 and it consists of the combination and arrangement of the devices, as hereinafter shown and described, in which identical letters represent identical parts.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the 0 portion of the frame of a street-car with our invention in place.
B is a loose drum upon axle O of a car. D is a ratchet-wheel keyed and secured to the axle C.
3 5 E is a gravity-pawl secured to the inner side of the drum B.
F is a counter-balance secured within the drum B by bolts and located on the side opposite to the pawl E.
G G is a chain or line attached to the drum B at the point g, and extending thence rearward to the beam I and forward around the periphery of said drum to and through the tube K in the cross-beams ac of the car- 5 frame A.
K is a tube through the cross-beams a a, through which the chain G runs to the ring L, to which ring the motive powerhorses or mules-is attached.
L is a removable section of the drum.
Z Z are oil-boxes attached to the drum.
Serial No. 302,783. (No model.)
m m are keys inserted in the key-seat in the axle C to secure the ratchet-wheel rigidly to the axle. The ratchet-wheel D is made in two sections, as shown in Fig. 3, and is firmly keyed to the axle, as shown, the opposite sections being secured to each other by the bolts 12., running through overlapping flanges. The drum B, as shown in Fig. 3, has a movable section, L, extending from the axle to the periphery of the drum and across its face, by means of which it (the drum) may be placed in position upon the axle after the ratchetwheel has been secured as shown, and the movable section can then be fixed in place in dovetailed grooves or by flanges and bolted to the main portion of the drum without removing the wheels or axles from their positions and said movable section is further held in position by the counter-balance F, which overlaps both sections of the drum and is secured by bolts.
The mode in which our invention operates is thus: When the car is at rest, the weighted side of the drum is in position, as shown in 7 5 Fig. 3, with the gravity-pawlE engaged with the ratchet D. When the horses start, the chain G will draw the drum B round in'thc direction of the arrow, Fig. 3, and the pawl E, engaging the ratchet will move the axle and wheels; but when the drum revolves to such position that the pawl drops by gravity and releases the ratchet, the chain G G becomes a rigid connection between the points of its attachment to the beam I and the motive power in front of cross-beam a, and the draft is then transferred from said drum to the beam I. The weighted side of the drum, causing a reverse motion thereof thus aids in releasing the pawl. This leverage of half the 0 diameter of the drum gives a manifest increase of power over the direct draft from the platform of the car. Experiment by an ordinary mechanic will determine the necessary length of the chain G between its attachment to the beam I and the pointy, at which it is secured to the drum B, to enable the pawl E to drop out of engagement with the ratchet. The momentum of the car when the horses stop will also carry it a little forward, and thus aid in affording slack to the chain G and contribute to the reverse motion of the drum. \Vhen the draft is changed to the other end of the car, a similar arrangement willprodnce the same eilfect. The drum B and ratchet-wheel II) are preferably made in two symmetrical halves, of metal, cast or boiler iron, as in Fig. 3; or the drum may he in unequal sections, as in dotted lines along 11 1 Fig. 2, and the shoulders of the ratchetwheel will operate to keep the drum from sliding laterally on the car-axle.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-starter, the combination of the Weighted loose drum 1 provided with mov- I 5 able section L and pawl E, ratchet-Wheel I), provided with keysm m, and chain G G with car-axle 0, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof We affix our sign atn res 20 in presence of two Witnesses.
