METHOD OF FEEDING LUBRICANTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,146, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed December 3, 1888- Serial No. 292,513- (No modeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT SCHMID and ROBERT SIEGFRIED, citizens of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Method of Feeding Lubricants, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in feeding lubricants, and has for its object the simultaneous delivery of the lubricant to one or more points from a common or central reservoir, the distribution being effected with certainty and in any desired regulated quantity.
In general terms the invention described herein consists in the method of feeding lubricants from a central point or station to one or more points of desired application, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an engine having our invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation of the lubricator on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lubricator.
In the practice of our invention we provide a vessel, 1, having a base or foundation, 2, whereby the vessel may be secured in any desired positiomand with a removable cap, 3, constructed to form an air-tight joint with the vessel. At a number of points on the vessel, corresponding to the number of places on the machine or in the shop to which the lubricant is to be applied, are formed bosses 4, having passages 5 formed therethrough connecting with the lower portion of the vessel, and to the bosses are secured the valve-cases 6, provided with a chamber, 7, and with passages 8 and 9, the former being in communication with the passages 5 and the latter leading to tubes 10. The flow of the lubricant through the passages 9 is controlled by valves 11, having screw-stems passing through the stuffing-boxes 12. The tubes 10 are preferably formed of glass, so that the amount of flow of lubricant may be ascertained, and are held in place by a metallic case, 13, screwing lubricant.
onto the valve-cases and constructed to form stuffing-boxes around the upper and lower ends of the tubes 10, the lower ends of the tubes being connected, through the medium of the cases 13, with tubes 14 leading to the several points to which the lubricant is to be applied. Prolongations of the passages 9 are formed by nipples 15, having contracted discharge-mouths, so that the lubricant will pass therefrom in drops or minute streams as regulated by the valves 11.
The upper portion of the vessel 1 ,is connected by a pipe, 16, to a fluid-pressure generator, as 17, or any suitable receptacle containing fluid under pressure, so as to maintain a fluid-pressure in the vessel above the The upper portion of the vessel above the lubricant is connected by tubes 18, passing down through the lubricant, with pas sages 19, formed in the bosses 4 and valvecases 6, said passages leading into the tubes or receivers 10, into which the lubricant flows, preferably at points above the discharge ends of the nipples 15.
By means of the tubes 18 and passages 19 a fluid-pressure equal to that in the vessel 1 is maintained in the tubes or receivers 10, and hence the flow of lubricant in such tubes or receivers will be in nowise accelerated, but flow naturally into the receivers under the force of gravity. As soon, however, as the lubricant escapes from the nipples 15, it will be carried along the tubes 14 by the fluidpressure and deposited at the place or places to be lubricated. The fluid in passing rapidly along the tubes 14 under pressure will pre vent any clogging up of such tubes by the lubricant or any foreign material, and, further, it will force the lubricant to points on a higher level than the vessel 1, thereby permitting of the arrangement of such vessel in positions of safety and ready accessibility.
In order to provide for renewing the lubricant without interfering with the operation of the apparatus, we employ a vessel, 20, having a valved connection, 21, with the vessel 1 and a valved connection, 22, with the funnel 23. The operation of this filling device will be readily understood without further description.
A glass gage, 24, may be attached to the lubricant-s, which consists in feeding the lubricant by gravity to fluid under pressure and then delivering such lubricant to the place or places of desired application by such fluid-pressure, substantially as set forth.
