UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE RAGE, OF NORWICH, NEI/V YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM BREESE, OF SAME PLACE.
HlTCH FOR THE ENDS OF CORD OR ROPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,074, dated May 7, 1889.
" Application filed August 22, 1888. Serial No. 283,428. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE RACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at N orwich, in the county of Ohenango and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hitches or Devices for Attaching the End of a Cord 0r Rope, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and easily-operated hitch or device for attaching the end of a cord or rope; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the hitch embodying my improvements, with the rope attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing the manner of detaching or disengaging the rope. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the hook. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the swinging jaw detached.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a hook provided with the threaded shank -13, adapted to be engaged in a post, wall, or other support, and the said hook is recessed on one side, as at C, to form a curved shoulder, D, and is provided at its extremity with the apertured ear E.
F represents the swinging jaw, which is approximately elliptical in shape, and is provided at one side with the apertured ear G, which aligns with the ear E, and is pivoted thereto by means of a suitable pin or rivet, N. This jaw is thus arranged in the recess O, which is formed in the hook, and when in its normal position the jaw bears on the shoulder D, above described.
The jaw is provided at its inner side with the notch or opening I, and around this notch or opening is arranged a laterally-extending flange or lip, K, which overhangs the hook and bears thereon when the jaw is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The swinging jaw is provided on its outer side, adjacent to the end of the notch or opening therein, with the laterallyextending stud or projection L.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the hook is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the cord or rope M is passed at one end through the notch or opening in the jaw, passedaround the stud or projection on the side of the jaw, carried again through the said notch or opening, and over the end of the rope, which is therein, thus firmly bind,- ing the loose end in place and forming a secure tie. To disengage the cord or rope from the improved hitch, grasp the stud or projection on the side of the swinging jaw and throw the latter out into the position shown clearly in Fig. 2, thereby allowing the cord orrope to slip readily from the jaw.
It will be seen that the overhangingflange or lip on the jaw fits over the hook, and thus forms asmooth bearing-surface for the rope or cord, thereby'avoiding chafing the latter.
It is obvious that this hitch may be employed in various positions in connection with tent-ropes, hammock and swing ropes, clothes-lines, &c.
Having described the invention, I claim- 1. In a hitch for ropes, &c., the combination, with a hook,of the swinging jaw arranged in contact with the side of the hook and pivoted at its upper edge to the extremity of the same, the jaw being provided at its rear side with a notch, I, and having a lateral stud or projection, L, substantially as specified.
2. In a hitch for ropes, the combination, with a hook, A, having a shoulder, D, at the rear side of its hooked portion, of the swinging notched jaw F, pivoted at its upper edge to the extremity of the hook, the said jaw being provided with a lateral stud or projection, L, and a curved flange or lip, K, which conforms to the outline of the notch and bears against the inner surface of the hooked portion of the hook A, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
