UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER AUGUSTUS PARRISI-I, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES A. BROOKS, OF SAME PLACE.
CLOTHES=HORSE.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 403,066, dated May 7, 1889. Application led January 17, 1889. Serial No. 296,683. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELMER AUGUSTUS PAR- RISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved clothes-rack, and will iirst be described, and then designated in the claims.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure lis an elevation of the rack. Fig. 2 is a view of one arm and bracket-hook. Fig. 3 is a top view of the rack. Fig. fl is another elevation of the rack and shows an additional feature. Fig. 5 shows the foot for the bracket-hook.
The letterA designates a 'square post or standard, and b the stand or supporting-feet. Each arm C has a bracket-hook, el, attached, the arm and bracket being connected at right angles to each other. At the point of the angle a hinge, e, is attached and makes connection with one side of the post. The four sides of the post. have these combined arms and bracket-hooks hinged thereto. When the arms C are extended horizontally, the bracket-hook d serves as a brace or support, and the arms are adapted for hanging thereon articles of clothing and household linen to be dried'. l/Vhen the `arms are not required for this purpose, theymay be turned upward vertically and take position close against the side of the post, and thereby cause the bracketfhooks d to project laterally, enabling them to serve as short hooks for small articles. Small hooks f hang at the corner edge of the post, and each takes into a staple, g, on the arm C and confines the latter to its vertical position.
An additional feature isV shown in Fig. 1l. 4o Here provision is made for independent adjustment of the arms C, so that any one of them alone may be extended horizontally or turned up without regard to the position of the other arms. This is effected by having the bracket-hook CZ attached to the arm Oat a point a short distance from the hinged end far enough from said end to form an ofset, h, at the back of the bracket-hook equal to the thickness of the arm-and then attaching a straddle-foot, e', to the extremity of the bracket-hook. The foot i is made of metal and straddles the turned-up arm C, that is next below, as shown.
Having described my invention, I claim- 55 l. A rack having in combination the post A, the arms C, each having attached abracket-hook, CZ, the arm and bracket being connected at right angles to each other, and a hinge, e, connecting thel arm and its hook to the post, as shown and described.
2. A rack having in combination the post A, the arms C, each having attached abracket-hook, d, the arm and bracket being connected at right angles to each other and having an offset, h, at the back of 4the brackethook, a hinge, c, connecting the arm and hook to the post, and a foot, z', attached to the bracket-hook to straddle a turn ed-up arm next below.
' In testimony whereof I afix my signature in the presence of tw,o witnesses.
ELIWIER AUGUSTUS PARRISH.
Witnesses: JOHN E. MORRIS, J No. T. MADDox.
