SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,041, dated May 7, 1889.
Application filed October 23, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES WILSON FOUST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Loaders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hay-loaders, and the novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction and the combinations, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as. more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the ap pended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hayloader embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the heads of the drum. Fig. 3 is an edge View showing the drumhead, with one of the traction-wheels illustrated in dotted lines, with the forked finger in position. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the forked finger removed. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detached details of a portion of the elevator-belt and the means for securing the slats to the chains. Fig. 8 is a detail, more particularly referred to hereinafter. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the drum-heads. Fig. 10 is a cross-section of the roller G and its shield.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the axle; B B, the traction or driving wheels, which may be of any approved or well-known construction.
0 is a frame supported by the axle and consisting of the horizontal bars 0, the uprights C the side bars, 0 and the inclined bars 0, connecting the upper ends of the uprights. On the axle, near each end thereof, is secured a drum-head, D, each of which is constructed substantially as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 9that is, an outer ring, D, the outer periphery of which is provided With a circumferential groove, d, an inner ring, D connected to the outer ring by means of the bars I), the inner ring being formed with arms 0,
which project inward, as shown, for a purpose hereinafter described.
The two heads are connected to form a drum by means of the bars E, which are secured at their ends to the bars 1), the ends of the bars E being suitably shaped to engage the slots at in the bars I) and be locked therein in any suitable manner.
At the upper end of the elevator-frame is journaled a roller, e,'0ver which and the drum formed by the heads and bars above described passes the endless elevator-belt, which is formed as follows: F is a chain-there being one at each side of the belt-and G are the transverse bars, each end of which is formed with a horizontal slot, f, in which the chains are secured in the following manner: The links of the chains at these points are formed, as shown in Fig. 7, with an interior enlargement, 9, provided with a vertical hole, h. This link is inserted in the slot in the end of the bar, as seen in Fig. 6. A bolt, 1', is then passed through the bar and through the hole in the enlarge- I ment in the link, and a staple or double carpet-tack, j, driven into the bar, with its legs embracing the head of the bolt, as shown in Fig. 6, thus securing the bolt against accidental displacement, the legs of the staple being clinched on the under side of the bar, if deemed necessary.
Secured to the under side of the side bars of the elevator frame, substantially at the center of the same, is a roller, G, carried by vertically-adjustable supports or arms h, and over this roller the endless elevator-belt travels on its way back from delivering its load of hay, and by adjusting the same the belt may be tightened as occasion may require. A shield, H, is provided over this roller to prevent the hay from wrapping around it. This shield is supported by and attach ed to the arms 7%, attached to the side bars of the elevator-frame, and in which the said roller is journaled. These arms it are braced by the bars 72. secured at one end to the uprights of the frame 0. The bars h are provided with a plurality of holes, as shown, by which it may be adjusted.
The upper ends of the side bars, 0 are provided with a hole, through which and through one of the holes in. the upper ends of the bars it pass pins, by which provision the position of the roller Gr maybe changed as desired.
I are forks bolted to the rear end of the frame, with the points Z resting in close proximity to the inner side of the rim of the drive-wheels, and with the points m working in the grooves (Z of the drum-heads, as shown, the whole being arranged to allow of the revolution of the drum-heads and drive wheels without friction for the purpose of gathering such portions of hay as may be hanging more or less loosely to other portions coming more directly under the action of the teeth in the bars E and throwing it inward toward the middle of the drum, and thus preventing it from falling between the drum-heads and the drive-wheels, or from being carried up by the drive-wheels and clogging the same, or until it becomes disengaged from the teeth of the bars of the drum and falls off at the outside of the machine.
The bars of the drum are provided. with' suitable teeth, 02, and the bars of the elevatorbeltare connected between their ends by a plurality of chains or ropes, as shown.
The armsor spurs c on the inner rings of the drum-heads are for the purpose of furnishing stops against which the bars of the elevator-belt may contact or rest to prevent them coming within reach of the teeth n on the bars of the drum 011 their return underneath to the drum.
K is a tongue attached to a portion of the frame of the device, and suitably journaled in brackets or plates 0. On the inner end of this tongue is a shaft, 19, carrying a drum with the usual ratchet-and-pawl attachment, and around this drum is wound the cord, rope, or chain P, the other end of which is provided with a suitable hook, q, and passes under a pulley, Q, on the outer end of the tongue, as shown in Fig. 8. This chain is designed to be passed over the rear bolster of the hay wagon and down to the coupling-tongue, and fastened there to it, so that when the chain is being wound round the drum by turning the crank thereof the effect will be to lift the tongue toward the top of the bolster and thus lifting the forward part of the machine from the ground, thus avoiding the necessity of lifting the same into position.
The operation is the same as in hay-loaders of known construction, and as the present invention resides wholly in the details of con struction, a detailed description of the oper ation is not thought necessary.
What I claim as new is 1. In a hay-loader, the combinatiomwith the drum having heads provided with. circunr ferential grooves in their outer. peripheries, of the drive-wheels, and the forks attached to the frame of the machine on each side in rear of the drum, with the points of the forks one in said groove and the other in close proximity to the inner side of the rim of the drivewheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the frame and the endless elevator-belt, of an adjustable roller 011 the under side of said frame and over which said belt passes, and a shield, H, over the top of said roller, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
