W. H. PAGE 85 G. O. SETOHELL. DIE FOR FORMING WOOD TYPE.
No. 402,850. Patented May '7, 1889 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W'ILLIAM H. PAGE AND GEORGE C. SETCHELL, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT,
ASSIGNORS TO THE WVILLIAM H. PAGE WOOD TYPE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,850, dated May '7, 1889.
Application filed December 5, 1888. Serial No. 292,719. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: with the depressed portions of the type, are
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. PAGE marked a, and the sunken parts of the die and GEORGE C. SETOHELL, of Norwich, in the are indicated by the surface having the hatchoounty of New London and State of Connectiings. The parts thus marked are all on the 5 out, have invented a new and useful Imone piece A, and form all the body of the provement in Dies for Forming Wood Type; letter. The division between the legs or and we do hereby declare that the following branches of the letter is formed by the naris a full, clear, and exact description of the row ribs a c, with the enlarged terminals, same. and the rest of the block or section is occu- 10 Our said invention relates to dies for formpied by the raised portions a a. The parts ing wood type by compression. It is shown between the ends of these raised portions and in connection with the sectional dies fully dethe ends of the block are open at the sides, scribed in an application filed in the United and if this block were used alone the side of States Patent Office on the 5th day of Decemthe type would need to be formed after the I 5 her, 1888, Serial No. 292,7 34, by WVilliam I-I. impression, whether the type were formed Page, one of the joint inventors of this invenseparately or in groups on a single block. tion; but the said invention is not limited to The side of the type would be determined by use or combination with dies made in section the side of the block, and not by the line mm,

Further, if the type were formed in tially the whole letter or figure. groups on a single block the parts of the let- The invention is designed to secure the. ter would be continuous with the spaces left more accurate and expeditious manufacture ,between the letters. For example, the raised of the wooden type. part a of the letter X would be continuous 25 It consists, essentially, of an interposed with the surface of the block between this strip combined with the dies representing the letter and the next on the same block. To characters adapted to form sunken spaces beform this margin and to give shape to the tween the characters on the blocks of the letter, we provide the intermediate pieces, I), type when such characters are arranged in straight and plain pieces, as wide or a little 0 groups in the blocks, or to form a shoulder on wider than the space required between the the type, or to leave the outside of the type with type when they are formed on the same block a finished side when the die by which it is and as deep as the other parts of the dies.

These being separate and removable, the part We have illustrated our invention in the A is open, and the interior grooves are acces- 3 5 accompanying drawings, in which sible to the file for finishing the interior faces Figure 1 represents in plan the die required and angles left imperfect by the engraving- 8 5 to make the type for the letter X. Fig. 2 tool. represents the same with the sections sepa- The strips Z7 maybe used for the purpose of rated. Fig. 3 shows in plan a die for the letleaving the die-pieces open on the sides for 40 ter M, and Fig. 4 represents the same with facility of finishing, as wide exactly as the the parts separated. Fig. 5 shows one die in saw-.kerf which divides the block; but it is side elevation. Fig. 6 shows in plan a group desirable to leave a shoulder, a, on the side of type on one block as formed by a group of of the type Which equals onehalf the space dies. Fig. 7 shows the same in end view. between the type when set, and thus forms 45 In Figs. 1 and 2 the part of the die marked half the spacing-block or spaces. The shoul= A represents the body of the letter X, this ders c on each side equal the whole width of being used as a sample or representation letthe strip 1) less the saw-kerf. ter to illustrate the principle of the invention. In Figs. 3 and 4 we have shown a die for The raised parts of the die, which correspond the letter M, in which the letter-die is com posed of three pieces, the central piece, D, being special to the letter, and the side pieces, (Z (I, being interchangeable. These pieces (1 cl have open sides also, as shown at (1 and these are bounded by the strips 77, as in the previous figures, and with the effect heretofore described. The sections and interposed strips are formed with beveled notches in the ends, which register when all the pieces are in the same plane, and which receive corresponding ribs 011 the clamp.
We claim as our invention- 1. A die for forming type by impression, having parts of its sides raised and parts depressed and open, substantially as described.
2. A die for forming type by impression, having parts of its sides raised and parts depressed and open, in combination with the strip b, adapted to close the open side.
3. Combined with the die having parts of its sides raised and parts depressed, the strip 1), for closing the open side, of a Width greater than the required distance between the type, substantially as described.
4. A die for forming type by impression, formed in sections and with portions of the depressed surface of the outer sections extending to the sides, combined with the strip 19, for closing the open side, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
