Description

. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYSANDER FLAGG AND GEORGE D. BRIGGS, OF PAWTUOKET, R. I.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONSTRUCTING TOY WATCHES, LOCKETS, &C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. L10.255, dated October 13, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that we, LYsANDER FLAGG and GEORGE D. BRTGGs, both of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Toy Watches, Lockets, Ste.; and we do hereb)7 declare that the followingis a full. clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga part of this specitlcation, in which- Figure l represents aplan or top view of a toy watch as the same comes from the die. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same when tinished. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the same, the line a' x, Fig. 2, indicating the pl in of section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the. several figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fullv7 u iderstnnd and construct our invention, We will proceed to describe it.
A represents the case of a toy watch, locket, or other similar article, which is produced with the ling B out of one piece 0f sheet metal by stamping with a suitable die. The ring or handle B is tirst made in the shape, as clearly shown in Fig. l ofthe drawings, of two sections, a b, and the outer' section, a, is folded over the inner section, b, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. fhen folded, the ring appears stout and heavy, and still very little stock is required to produce the same. That portion of the ring where the same joins the case A is dropped below the edge ofthe case. as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so that when the ring is folded the middle or dividing line of the two sections is on a level, or nearly so, with the top edge of the case. lf the ring is not so dropped below the edge of the case the face looks dat; but by this improvement the appearance of the whole is considerably improved. The edge c of the case is scalloped, so that when the glass has been introduced said edge can be readily turned over and the glass will beA firmly held in place, and at the same time the appearance of the article will be improved. The back of the case is engraved or otherwise provided with a suitable design, which, of course, will be varied to suit circumstances.
By our improvement a large quantity of stock and labor is saved, no soldering is required, and the stock can be polished before it is struck.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As a new article of manufacture, a toy watch or loclret, the case A of which is made out of one piece with the handle B, in the manner herein shown and described.
2. A handle, B, produced by folding one section, a, over the other section, b, as and for the purpose set forth.
