IMPROVED CROSSCUT-SAWING MACHINE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,165, datedvOctober 6, 1863.

To all whom fit may concern Beit known that I, JOSEPH FEEY, of the city of Battle Creek, in the county ot' `Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Guiding Pitmen and Saws; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference bein g had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- The letter S represents a shat't to be connected with the power, on which is the pitmauwheel W, pitmairwheel K D, pitman with a joint, where the same connects with the arm J of the rocking shaft Y; C, saw secured to the end of the pitman L L, arms attached to the upright pQsts-P P, and movable on the bolts d; E, guide in which the pitman plays; a b, frictioii-rollers*the one above and thc other below the pitman, and playing in the pitmanguide; A, bar 'that holds the sawguide, and connected with arms L L with a hinge; B, saw-guide preventing lateral motion of the saw when the same is not cutting; G, lever for raising and lowering the pitma'n and saw, pitman-guid'e, and saw-guide H, rope attached to arm E, passing over pulley I and fastened to lever G; F, cross-bar fastened to arms L L, and projecting on one side to hold he lever.

There are two rods extending from the rocking shaft Y to the bolt passing through the pitman at its joint, serving for braces to steady the pitman.

The bar A being connected with the arms L L with a hinge, the saw is permitted to cut through a log, leaving the sawguide resting ou the top ot' the log. The pitman, saw, pitman-gnide, and saw-guide being raised by means ot' said lever and rope, the log is moved along, ready for another cnt, without stoppin g the machine.

The apparatus for carrying the log is not shown in the drawing, as nothing is claimed therefor.

As soon as the saw cuts through a log, the saw, pitman, pitmanguide, and saw-guide are raised by means ot the lever G, which lever is brought down and held by means of the projecting arm F until the log is adjusted for another cnt, all of which can be done without stopping the motion of the saw and pitman.

That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The pitman-guide attached to the movable arms L L, and saw-guide attached to the bar A, moving on the hinge, as represented in the drawing, in combination with the lever G, for raising and lowering the same at pleasure, and also for holding the same up by bringing said lever under the cross-bar F while adjusting the log.
