SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,804, dated March 19, 1889.

Be it known that I, ADAM S. ALL, of Oakland, Alameda county, State of California, have in vented an Improvement in Channeledloint Nails; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to an improved nail, which I term a channeled-point nail.

It consists in dividing the entering end of the nail or spike into two points, so that a V- shaped notch is formed in the end of the spike, and from the apex or bottom of this notch the sides are grooved or channeled upon each side, extending farther up the sides of the nail, as will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the nail with myimproved point. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lower end of the nail.

A is the nail having the V-shaped channel at B, the apex of this channel being in the center between the two sides, and it diverges outwardly to the end, so as to make approximately sharp or cutting edges upon opposite sides. From the central apex of this channel, and upon each side of the nail, a groove ordepression, O, which is also V-shaped, is extended up the sides of the nail, becoming gradually shallower from the apex B to the point D, where it terminates. By this construction the nail or spike is provided with approximately sharp edges upon opposite sides of the end,

which will allow the nail to enter the wood easily, cutting a channel into which the wood is to enter, and the apex of the channel B again divides that portion of the wood which enters this channel, and, forcing it out through the diverging grooves C, it is pressed in the direction of the grain of the wood, so as to allow the nail or spike to pass in easily as it is driven and without splitting the wood, and also without forcing the wood ahead of it in compressed lumps, as takes place when a square-ended nail is driven. In the present case I have shown the nail as square in crosssection, but this point, with its double V- shaped channel, may be adapted to any form, thenail or spike being either wrought, drawn, or cut.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A nail the point of which has a central V- shaped notch diverging from the apex so as to form two cutting-edges at the end, and having a longitudinal converging channel extending up the sides of the nail upon each side of the central apex, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
