CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,764, dated March 19, 1889. Application iiled December 3l, 1888. Serial No. 295 ,024. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MAYEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Car-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-brakes; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a bottom plan view of a car-truck, showing my improved brake applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, the braces that support the journal-boxes being removed and the ends of the truck-beams being shown dn section. Fig. 3 is a det-ail view showing the manner of supporting the brake-shoe.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the transverse beams of the truck, which are pivotally secured to the under side of the car in the usual manner, and are provided at their ends with the braces B, supporting the journal-boxes C, in which the ends of the axles are mounted.
To the under side of the lower beam A, near the center thereof, I secure the guides D,which receive the inner ends of the vibrating levers E, which are pivoted near their outer ends to the underside of the said beam A. The said levers E are connected to the brake-shoes F by the pitmen G, having their outer ends pivoted to the brakeshoes and their inner ends pivoted to the said levers E `on opposite sides of the fulcrum thereof. The inner ends of the levers E are connected by the links Il with the lower end of the operat ing-lever I, fulcrumed on a casting, J, projecting forward from the upper beam A, as shown. The said operating-lever has its upper end connected with the brake-applying devices on the car-platform, as will be readily understood.
I( designates a spring having its front end secured to the said lever I and its rear end secured to the lower beam, A, thereby serving to hold the brake-shoes normally off the wheels.
In order to prevent the brake-shoes slipping from the tread of the wheels, I provide the retaining-rods Il, which have their outer ends pivoted to the pitmen Gnear the brake-shoes,
and their inner ends pivoted to the straps M, secured on the under side of the beam A. The brake-shoes are further retained in proper position and supported against the tread of the wheels by the hangers N, having their lower ends pivoted to the brake-shoes and their upper ends mounted upon pivot-rods O, secured in the projecting ends of the metallic strap secured upon the upperside of the lower beam, A.
From the foregoing description it will be seen `that I have provided a car-brake in which all the operative parts are arranged beneath the 4central transverse beams of the ca1truck, and are consequently out of the way and not liable to be broken.v The usual brake-beams extending transversely between the brake-shoes are dispensed with, and the parts are all very compactly arranged at the middle of the truck. Vhen it is desired to apply the brake, the upper end of the operating-lever is moved toward the beam of the truck, thereby drawing the lower end of said lever away from the said truck, and consequently causing the outer ends of the levers E to be moved so as to apply the brake-shoes to the wheel. Upon releasing the pressure upon the operatingl ever the spring K at once returns it to its normal position and releases the brake-shoe from the car-wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l.. The combination, with the transverse t1nck-bea1n, of the levers pivoted on the under side thereof, the brake-shoes connected to said levers, the operating-lever mounted on the beam, the links connecting the lower end of the same with the inner ends of the pivoted levers, and the spring secured to the operating-lever and the beam, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the transverse beam of the truck, of the levers pivoted to the under side of the same, the brake-shoes, the pitmen connecting the brake-shoes with the levers, the straps M, secured to the beam, the retaining-rods having their ends pivoted to the pitmen and the straps, and devices for operating the levers, as set forth.
3. rlhe combination, with the beam, of the IOO levers pivoted thereto, devices for operating the levers, the brake-shoes, the pitinen eonneeting the brake-shoes with the levers, the straps M, secured to the beam, the retainingrods having their ends pivoted to the pitinen and the said straps, the metallic straps secured to the upper side of the beam, the pivot-pins securedin the ends of said straps, and thehangers having their upper ends mounted on the said pivot-pins and their lower ends pivoted Io to the brake-shoes, as set forth.
