Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHAN F. T IINDGREN, OF (*ROOKPTON, MINNESOTA.
REMEDY FOR RHEUMATlSlVl, 84C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,192, dated February 5, 1889.
Application filed October 15, 1888. Serial No. 288,058. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHAN FREDRIK LIND- GREN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Medicinal Compound, of which the following is a specification.
This improved medicinal compound is composed of the following ingredients, prepared in the manner set forth: One and a half ounce of scnega (Polygala senega) root, washed clean, is placed in one-half gallon of pure water. The water is then put over the tire and allowed to boil slowly for two hours, sufficient additional waterbeing added as the water evaporates to make one-half gallon of extract at the completion of the boiling. After the completion of the boiling the extract is strained and allowed to cool. When cold,- there is added to the extract one ounce of cold-pressed castor-oil, (Ricinus communts.) two ounces of cooking-soda, (bicarbonate of of soda,) two ounces of sirup, one ounce of saltpeter, (nitrate of potasln) one ounce of lemon-juice, (Ultra-slime)? a712,) one-half ounce of blue-berry j nice, Vaccin in m corymbosum,) and one-fiftieth of an ounce of ground red pepper, (Capsicum common-) This mixture is then mixed by thoroughly agitating the same. To the mixture there is then added one-half ounce of essence of peppermint, (J1 entho pipe/"17%) which is thoroughly incorporated with the mixture by agitating the same. The liquid compound thus formed is then bottled and tightly corked, and after it has stood for about four hours it isthen ready for use.
Before using the medicine it should be well shaken, and after using the bottle should be tightly corked.
This medicine can be used both externally and internally. It is applied externally for scalds, burns, bruises, open sores, salt-rheum, itch, hives, and other eruptions. The medicine is adapted for use in rheumatism and neuralgia, for which it may be taken both externally and internally. It is to be taken internally for inflammation of the lungs, liver, and stomach, and also for headache, earache, sore throat, and other internal inflammations.
The dose for internal use is one tea-spoonful for an adult, to be taken one hour before each meal. For children under twelve years of age the dose is one-half of a tea-spoonful, and for children under six years of age the dose is ten drops. "hen used internally, it should be applied with a cloth, and, except in the case of open sores, the place to which it is applied should be rubbed with the hand until dry.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described medicinal compound composed of water, senega (Pelt gala SflEgCl) root, caster-oil, cooking-soda, siru p, saltpet'er, lemon-juice, blueberry juice, Vacez'nium c0- rymbosmm) red pepper, and essence of peppermint, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
