UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
JULIUS IV. STOREY AND OSEPII OIISSON, OF COTTON GIN, TEXAS.
SELF-COOLING JOURNAL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,088, dated January 29, 1889.
Application filed October l5, 1888. Serial No. 288,082. (No model.)
To all 'whom 'it 77mg/ concern:
Be it known that we, J ULrUs W. S'ronnv and J osEPH OLssoN, both ot' Cotton Gin, in the county ot' lreestone and State ot Texas, have invented a certain newand useful Improvernent in Self-Cooling Journal-Boxes, ot which the lollowingis a -full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying.;` drawings, forming' part ot' this specification, and in which- Figure I is a vertical section of our improved jourmrl-box, taken on line I I, Fig'. II. Fig'. II is an end view. Fig'. III is a vertical transverse section taken on line III III, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a top view with the cap or cover removed. section taken on line V V, Fig'. VI. Fig. YI is a detail top view of 'the cap or cover, showing' the Hume-tunnel.
Our invention relates to an improvement in journal-boxes, intended more particularly for use on railway-cars; and our invention consists in vfeatures ot novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims. Referring to the drawings, l represents partot' the axle of a railway-car; 9, the box, and the brass. The box is constructed with a central chamber formed b y walls 4, and which receives the journal 5 of the axle. The walls l have a top, G, between which and the journal the brass 3 tits, and they have a bottom, 7, between which and the journal a packing, 8, is placed, as usual. The walls et are inelosed by an outer casing' or housing', 9, having a top, IO, and a bottom, Il. This casing or housing forms a water-chamber, l2, at each side ot the walls 4' and beneath the walls. This chamber is filled with water for the purpose of keeping the journal cold 0r to prevent its being' overheated. The walls 4 extend above the top 6 to the top IO, as shown in Fig. III, forming,` a water-chamber,
Fig'. V is an enlarged detail 123, and thus the journal is enti rely surrounded b v water.
The water is placed in thc chambers I2 and IS through. a funnel, Il, on the cap l0, this cap having perorations l 5 at the bottom of the tunnel, one ot' the perli'orations a-llowingl the water to enter the chamber .l2 and the other perforation allowing' the water to enter the chamber 123. The chambers I2 and IS are thus filled with water.
The housing` or casing' 9 is provided with a lid, IG, through which oil may bepoured into the chamber formed by the walls l and bottom 7, and the joint between the housing' 9 and the walls is packed, as shown at I7, Fig'. I, to prevent the water from getting at the journal or into the chamber formed by the walls et and Abottom T.
Journal-boxes thus constructed can be cheaply mainifactured, and the journal will be kept cool and prevented from bein g' overheated.
lVe claim as our invention- '.l. In a self-cooling' journal-box, the combination of the walls 4, having' top b and bottom 7, supporting' tho lubricating' packing, and the. housing 9 IO, forming` water-chamber l2 below and at the sides of the chamber formed by the walls 4 and bottom 7, and water-chamber I3 above the top 6, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. ln a self-cooling' journal-box, the combination ot' the walls Ll, having top 6 and bottom '7, housing 9, cover IO, packing I7, and a tunnel on the cover', having perforations l5 at its bottom t'or lilling' the respective chambers l2 and lf3, sul'istantially as set forth.
JULIUS IV. STOREY, JOSEPH OLSSON. \\'itnesses:
W. C. RICHARDSON, W. J. LOADER.
