A. W. TERRY.
' ANTI-FRICTION BEARING. No. 396,968. Patented Jan. 29, 1889.
WITNESSES. INVENIORI p0 ATTORNEY, I
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ALFRED ll. TERRY, OF BROOKLYN, NElV YORK.
ANTI-FRICTION BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,968, dated January 29, 1889.
Application filed November 3, 1888. Serial No. 289,859. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
7 Be it known that I, ALFRED \V. Trim-av, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and. St ate of New .York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Anii-lhfictiou Bearings, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reterence being had to the accompanying draw- In the accom mnying sheet of drawings,v
Figure l is a cross-stmliou of the bearing ap plied to a sheave. Fig. 2 is apart sectional iew of the same in the planes :1: :r, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and l are respectively end and side views of the sy .cm of rollers.

parts in the several views.
This invention is particularly applicable to sheaves, and was made with special regard to its use in that connection; but it may also be applied to the various other objects for which hearings of this class are suitable.
Vhile the drawings show the hearing as part of a sheave, its construction and application in all cases will be readily nndersioml from these drawings and the description.
On each of three or more pins, ('l (I (1, is loosely mounted a pair of short rolls, 1) 7.), and on each of. a corresponding number of pins, (0 a a is loosely monnted a single roll, 1
I), of the same diameter as the rolls 1) b. The ends of these pins are secured at equal distances apart to two fiat rings, A A, placed with their axes in common, the pins a. a u
alternating with the pins 11 a a in a series, 5
all being parallel to and equally distant from the axis of the rings, and each of the rolls 1) Z) Z) on the pins (1 a u. passing between the rolls 1) Z) of each of the two pairs of rolls adjacent thereto on the pins u a a, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and l.
The system of rollers, arranged and united as described, is inclosed by a shell, B, open at the ends, and having rims c to retain the rollers in position. The rims c are both shown as integral parts of the shell B, and when they are formed in this manner the rollers must he placed. in the shell before the rings A A are pm-manently united to all. the pins; but one oi. the rims can. be made removable, if desired, and then the rolls may be permanently secured together before they are placed in the shell.
All. the rollers come in contact with the shaft 0, which passes through the center of the system, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and they all roll upon the inner surface of the shell l the office of the pins (L a, &c., being merely to cause the rolls to maintain their proper relative positions.
The shell. l3 is attached in any suitable manner to the sheave, or to whatever object it may be desired to apply the hearing.
On each of the pins (1, instead of a single roll I), may be mounted two such rolls, the additional rolls being placed between one of the outer rows of rollers, as they appear in Fig. l, and the adjz'icent ring A or A, the length. of the pins and ot the hearing being increased accordingly; and still other rollers may he added in a similar manner, either on the pins (1 u a or on the pins u u u, the arrangement ot' the rolls in all cases being such as has been explained.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An an lfl-fl'lCl'lOll bearing consisting of the rings A A, united by the series of pins a a, arranged alternately, as set forth, the pins a a a of said series having mounted thereon rolls Z) Z) I), and the remaining pins a a a having mounted thereon rolls I) Z), each roll Z) passing between two of the rolls b I) on either side of the same, substantially as and for the pn rpose described.
2. In an anti-friction bearing, the combination of the rings A A, the series of pins a a,
arranged alternately, as set forth, the rolls b 9 1),, arranged in pairs, one pair on each of the pins a a a, and the rolls 1) b b, one on each of the pins a a a, each roll 11 passing between the rolls Z) I) of each of the two pairs on each side of the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ALFRED XV. TERRY.
In presence of G. M. PLYMPTON, D. A. CARPENTER.
