SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,424, dated January 1, 1889.

e it known that I, WILLIAM NEWEST Co- LAM, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, in the county of Middle` sex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable Tramways, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in cable tramways, the objects being, iirst, to support and fix the slot-rails lin a more secure and ri gid manner than has hitherto been done, and, secondly, to prevent the shank ofthe gripper from bearing` against the sides of the slot-rails and thereby creating friction when the car is traveling on curves.

The slot-rail A vmade of a Z-sect-ion with a double bend in its vertical face, so that it. is practically ot' a double-Z section. It will be seen that a pair ot' these slot-rails is used to torin the slot, being tixed to the framework ot the cable-way parallel and opposite to eachother,
forming the slot for the griliper-shanlt by and between them.
The fish-plate is made of a double-L seetion to coincide with the outside face of the slot-rail A. The bearing-face of the fish-plate that comes in contact with the slotiail follows the outline thereof as far as the outward bend, where it slightly leaves the rail and curves outward to form the horizontal iiange sooner than t-he rail, so thatits horizontal flange does not rest on the horizontal flange of the slotrail. In the inner face of the tish-plate is formed a longitudinal recess, l), to receive the longitudinal proj eetion ct of the slot-rail, and it is also preferably recessed lower down, as shown, so as not to prevent too large a bearin g-su rt'ace to the sl ot-rail. Suitable holes are formed in the iish-plate to receive the tish bolts y and gj', the former iixing the lish-plate to the vertical web of the slot-rail through its longitud inal projection (L, and the latter to the horizontal iliange. By fixing the iish-plate to the slot-rails inthis manner each row of bolts automatically locks the other, owing to the lines ot' tension being at right angles to one another, the spring of the horizontal flange of the [ish-plate, which is not in contact with the horizontal flange oli' the slot-rail, as hereinbe- ,fore described, as it, is drawn up by the bolts n', most effectively preventing their working loose.
l would have it understood that l do not limit 'in vselt' to the exact construction hereinbefore described and shown, but hohl myself at liberty to malte such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope ot' my invention.

A slot-rail :for a cal )lo tramway, provided with a horizontal flange upon one sidle at the top of it, a double bend in its vertical web, thereby throwingl the lower part of said web to one side, and a second hi'irizontal iange at the bottom ot' the rail upon the opposite side oli' it troni the top Flange, siibstantially-,as and lior the purpose set forth.
2. In a cable tramway, the combination, with. the slot-rail hereinbefore described and shown, ot.' the {ish-plate adapted to be fixed to the slot- IOO rail by two rows of bolts Whose lines o'f tension are at rig-ht angles to one aneth er, as and for lshe purpose set forth.
