JOSEPH BOYER, OF CT. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE BOYER RAILYAY SPEED RECORDER AND INDICATOR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE PU LLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,208, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed December G, 1837. Serial No. 257,149. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BOYER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State ot' Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pulleys, of which the followingl is a full, clear, and exact description, reteren ce bein g' had to the aecon'ipanying' drawings, `toriningI part ot this spcciiication, and in which- Figure I is a side view of myiniproved pulio ley, which is iorined in two parts. Fig; Il is a face view sllowing,` the two parts separated.
Fig. III is a section taken on line III III, Fig.
I. IV and V are detail sections showing the groove of different widths.
My invention relates to sectional grooved pulleys; -and my invention consists in features of novelty l'lereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
l is the hub ot my pulley; 2, the radial 2o arms thereof forming' the web or spider; 3, the inner rim havingl a flange, 5, formed with a beveled bearing-tace, 5;and 4 the outer rim having a flange, U, formed with a beveled bearing-face, UR The inner rim, 3, has an external screw-threal, and the outer ri1n,t, has an internal serew-thrcml tit-tinel the exter-y nal screw-thread ot' the inner rim. The outer rim, 4, is positively adjusted on and parallel with the inner rim, 3, by turning' it so as to 3o move it in or out to decrease or increase the distance between the beveled :faces of the Hang- es 5 and 6, which t'orin a V-shaped Q,'roove or channel, 7, between them.
8 is a belt supported on the beveled faces 3 5 at any distance between the base and the periphery ot' the pulley. Turning the outer riin inward or outward increases or decreases the width oiA the V-shaped groove or channel between the flanges, as shown in Figs. a and 5. The outer rim is held to any adjustment by 4o means oi? a suitable catch. I have shown a lever or dog', il, pivoted by pin l() to one of the arms L of the web or spider having a short arm, 1], against which presses a spring', l2, as shown in liigzIII. rlhe long, arni of the lever i5 or dogl engages one ot' a series of notches, 13,
in the rim -t and holds the latter to any position to which it may be adjusted.
It will thus be seen that the diameter of the pulley so far regards the bearing-surface 5o of the belt may be increased or diminished.
I claim as my inventionl. A pulley comprising an inner riin having a flange formed with a beveled bearing-face, an outer rim having a (lange formed with a beveled bearing-face, said rims having screwthreaded connection by which the riins are positively adjusted for increasing,l or decreasing the radius or pitch-line of the belt, and a locking' device for holding' the rims to their 6o adjustment, substantially as described.
A pulley comprising` an inner rini provided with a threaded portion and havingI a flange formed with a beveled bearing-face, the outer riin provided with a threaded portion fitting' over the threaded portion of the inner rim and a liange Yformed with a beveled bearing-face, and a spring-catch for holding the outer rim to its adjustment, substantially as described.
