Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN TINGLEY, OF VATERFORD, NEV .'I'ERSEY.
IlVl-PROVEIVI ENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39.507, dated August 11, 1863.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, JOHN TINGLEY, of Wa terford, in the county of Camden and State ot' New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a true and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a churn con* structed with my improvement. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge view ot' the head Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion ofthe head. Fig. 5 is an edge view of one of the staves of the churn. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the clamp, allot' which will be described more fully hereinafter.
My invention consists in providing the ordinary barrel-churn with a head, whichinay be removed at pleasure for the-purposes of -filling, emptying, cleaning, and airing.
To enable others to make and use my inreir tion, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
`I construct luy-churn in the ordinary inanne'r ot'eonstructing barrel-churns, with the eX- eeptions ot' the movable head and the clamping-hoop, as hereinafter described. l
Fig. 1 represents a churn with my improvement in perspective, A being the body ot' the same; B, the movable head (i, the upper and clamping hoop, and D the axle of the dashers. The head B, I construct with a slightly. beveled edge, grooved as shown in Fig. 3, E
`being the groove. This groove I fill with a strip of some suitable elastic substance-as india-rubber-projecting beyond the edge, as shown in Fig. 4, in which F is a section ofthe elastic strip. The upper ends of thestaves of the churn are beveled on the inner side, as shown at G, Fig. 5. Thus when the head is put in place, as the bevel on the edge oi' the head and the bevel on the inner side of the upper end of the stares correspond, an almost perfect `ioint would at once be formed, and this joint, by means of the projecting elastic band F and the clamping-hoop C, would be rendered perfectly water-tight and secure. The clanipingdioop C rests in the rabbet H, turned on the outside ofthe upper end of the barrel.
The clamp isA constructed and operated as follows: A metallic plate, I, Figs. l, 2, and 6, of about the'saine width of the hoop and made to fit the curvature ot' therabbet H, is provid ed with a projecting lug, K. To one end of l thisplate an end of the hoop is securely fastened, as seen at L. A curved bifurcated lever, M, is pivot-ed to the lug K. This lever is provided with a link, N, or other equivalent device, which passes through or is pivoted to the lever a short distance from the pivot through the lug. The other lend of this j back also, and the hoop loosened, so that, the
pressure upon the edge of the head being removed, it can be easily withdrawn and the churn emptied or cleaned without trouble. A
W'hen the churn is to be used, it is only necl essary to place the head inproper position and to throw the lever intothe position indicated in Figsl, 2, and 6, when the ends of the hoop will be drawn toward each other, constricting the upper ends of the stavesand rendering the joint between the s taves and the head perfectly tight. The line of draft of the link being carried inside'the, center upon which the lever moves, (as at Fig. 2,) it must remain in that position until force is applied to the lever to draw it back toward the position indicated by the red lines.
In use the-churn :may be laid upon its side in the ordinary position'of barrel-churns.v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The clampinghoop C, operated by the lever M, link N, -and plate l, or their eqnivalents, substantially as described.
2. The head B, provided with the groove E andthe elastic strip F, or their equivalents, in combination with the clamping-hoop, the lever, the link, and the plate. as above described.
JOHN 'FING LEY.
